O/T--the weather here is NUTS!

(I'm using the Magic Dust icon because it looks a little like snow! :) )

I'm in West Texas, near the Panhandle. We do get cold weather and the occasional snow flurries and ice storms during the winter months. But they are predicting up to 12" of snow by this Sunday! YIKES! Of course, being West Texas, we could end up getting 0. ;) The local newspaper has pictures of people standing in line at one of the grocery stores stocking up on supplies for the weekend. I suppose Northerners who are used to this kind of weather are laughing their hineys off at us, but we are just not prepared for, nor used to this sort of thing. I myself have to find the time to run to the store for sandwich stuff. If our electricity goes out, then we'll starve to death. Everything I have has to be cooked and everything in my house is electric. I suppose we could set up the charcoal grill in the garage, but I don't think we have any charcoal. That's not something I keep around the house during the winter.

Funny tho', I remember as a kid (and I grew up only 20 miles from where I now live) we used to get lots of snow. My mom's house faced the north and I can remember having to practically tunnel out the front door because of the snow drifts. (I'm sure it wasn't *that* bad, but I was little and those were really big drifts!!)

Anybody else having really weird weather than what is normal for this time of year?

Oh yes, here in San Diego County, too! We had snow flurries last week and the water in my birdbath has been frozen solid most mornings these past 3-4 days. There was an inch of snow on the ground last week at the ranch where we board our horses -- 29 degrees at 4:30pm! Bbrrrr....

We, in the North, are having a much warmer winter than usual, and practically no snow at all. Today there was a snow/rain flurry thingy, but nothing stuck. We've never had no snow at all at this time of year!

I live in Texas, also, and I remember playing in the snow many times. My DS-17 has only seen a slight snow once. It didn't even cover the grass and when he made a snowman, it was about 18 inches tall. I have a picture of this thing with grass sticking out all over. Pretty funny.

But yeah, it's weird. Our parents used to drive us to the only hills around town and turn us loose with cardboard boxes, or whatever we could find. I wish DS would have had the chance to play in the snow like that.

Here in Canada I guess we forget about our change of seasons. Get the best of all worlds I guess (except for the tropics which we have to fly away for)...lol

I live in the Boston area and it has been unusually warm. There was one day in Dec. that broke all previous records for warmth, which was about 65 degrees. Not that I am complaining. I hate the cold and I really hate having to shovel out before I go to work. It's not as bad on the weekends when I can take my time. This week one day was a high of the teens and it was pretty shocking. Now we are in the 30's which is kind of normal. I do agree that it's worse in places where they aren't used to snow. I went to Washington, DC once and got stuck in a snow storm and the city was just crippled. Here they seem to send out the plows if there is one flake on the ground.

Oh, I think that is soooo true. A few weeks back, ds20 was in Colo. when they got hammered by all that snow. I worried myself sick about him because he is just not used to driving in snow. He told me later that the roads were in great shape, much better than they are here when we get just a little bit of the white stuff. :) They (cities and state) are just much better prepared to handle it.
