Pink Video - Stupid Girl

Has anyone seen the music video "Stupid Girl" by Pink? All I can say is a high five to you Pink! It shows Pink portraying so many celebrity girls and how they get so caught up in the culture that they lose themselves. After going through the women's movement in the 70's and wanting to have decent paying opportunities, I am so shocked at how quickly the pendulum has swung the other way. We made great grounds in the 80's; women wore suits and climbed the corporate ladder. They had families too. Some women opted out of the work force for awhile to raise families. But when did we fall WAY back to the lack of respect that is shown for young women these days... I am really bothered by this. Rap music has done so much damage for women and having a mutual respect between a guy and a girl. Not just Rap though, media and tolerance in our schools. As I try to help my own 16 yr. old DD with her self-esteem, I can't help but notice many girls around with the same problem. In Pink's video she asks, "what happened to the girl who wants to be President; she's dancing in a video with 50 cent." In my community of 10,000 I see so many girls trying to please guys.. only to have the guys disrespect them. They should be striving to achieve their own success, not seek approval from these guys! I even had to have a discussion with my 15 yr old DS, when I heard him talking in a way to his GF that I didn't like at all. I haven't heard it again though. I am interested to hear what others have to say about this.

Good post Deb.
I'm going to try to find this video and send it to DD.

Much of rap is just so much noisy lame machismo bull s**t. The words they use to describe women and their body parts is about as sick as it gets.
Is this the cause of the problem, or symptomatic of the problem?
The world may never know.....
I just keep telling DD to define and achieve her own goals and dreams, THEN find a guy to share them with. High school is just a practice ground to learn how to relate to the opposite sex without killing them, so these relationships shouldn't be taken too seriously... :-)

What you are telling your DD is almost EXACTLY what I just said to my DD last night. Whether she was listening to me, I really don't know. But somewhere down the road it may make sense to her.

It doesn't help that I met DW when I was 15..lol
Though, we weren't serious until well into college.

Deb, I agree with you 100%. I can't say it better than you already have. I've also seen the Pink video and am impressed with her. I hope that her message gets through.

My girls love the video and have been talking about it for some time.

I just want to throw into the mix that this message is not just for out DDs but ALSO our DSs. We talk about how we need to teach our girls to be this and that. All the pitfalls they need to watch out for.

But we are also responsible for raising our sons. We need to teach them a thing or two as well. There is a lot of pressure on boys to act a certain way. To be a "stud". To be "manly" lets teach them what those terms really mean. Not what they see in pop culture.

Boys are not inately out for one thing. It is just no one bothered to take the time to teach them it is ok and right to respect the person behind the skirt.

Although I'm not a big fan of Pink, I too love this song! I remember when I saw her perform it on the Nickolodeon Awards show - and thought, "I wonder if these kids are even listening to the lyrics." I do want to discuss it with dd - but this is not the type of music dd listens to. She's into hard rock and doesn't much like Pink. Its funny, though, b/c my dd is really a "Pink" type of girl - beautiful, rebellious, opinionated, a little "tough" around the edges - the "armour" she uses to protect herself from all the drama at school, no doubt.
