made me wonder about the differences in prices around the country.

Well then, howdy neighbor! Sort of a neighbor, I guess. DH's office is in the Scripps Ranch area (it is just across the street from SRHS) and we drive through Rancho Penasquitos to get DD to her school on Del Mar Heights Road. (Actually, DH does the majority of the driving.) We're pretty rural out here in East County ... in fact, up until last week, we had just one stoplight in the entire town.

We live in northeast Ohio - halfway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. I have a daughter who attended this year, so it was a first for us...

Prom tickets $60 per person - included charter bus ride to prom, dinner, dance/DJ. This year prom was held at a castle about 40 minutes away, therefore no limo. Opportunity to sell candy in December to offset cost of ticket.

Dress: $300

After prom dinner: Since they didn't get back to the school, they really didn't go anywhere after. No one could decide what to do for "after prom" so that didn't happen either :)

Flowers: Boys/Girls $40 (his mom bought both flowers, we bought the pictures)
Pictures: $20
Hair: $40
Nails: $25

Only Seniors and juniors are permitted to attend.

Mom to Emily (18), Conor (17) and Hannah (12)
Wife to David - 8/20/88

How much are tickets where you are and does that include dinner?

Tickets are $35/person. I think seniors are less or free, but I'm not sure. My ddd is a sophomore, but her boyfriend is a jr so she is going this year. The ticket is only to get in, they are going out to dinner before. I'm not sure what kind of entertainment will be there. They also have an "after prom" party at the school that is all paid for with donations from local businesses.

What area do you live in?

We live in S. Michigan, very small town. The prom is at a Country Club about 15 minutes from our school. (It's still called a country club, but it is open to the public now) Her dress cost $165 (I only paid the $65 - her step-grandma paid $100) My mom bought her shoes ($35) and jewelry ($5) and is paying to have her hair done ($35) I did splurge on a bra - she has a large chest and can't wear a regular bra with the dress, so I got her one of those that stick on ($30)

She will definitely be able to wear the dress, shoes and jewelry again so I don't feel too bad about the money. Of course, I didn't spend much myself.

Wow! We got off easy. We're in mid-Michigan. Tickets were $25 per person, and my son went stag, and paid for the ticket himself. He wore his choir formalwear (this year's tails, last year's vest and tie) so no cost for that. He and his buddies went to Outback Steakhouse for dinner. He had $15 and we pitched in another $15.

The prom was in the large banquet room at our local Royal Scot bowling/golf place. They had a DJ and got some cute party favors. Matt said the food was good.

There was no official post-prom party. One of his friends invited him to a post-prom party, but he came home instead. One of the boys drove--no limo.

I'm in southern michigan - near Jackson. Michigan is not the best place to live these days, that's for sure!

I asked my DD how much the prom tickets were and she said that hadn't been determined yet--they are having the prom June 1, so they have to decide soon. I guess all seniors have to pay dues, which I think is $50. They can't graduate unless dues are paid, but of course, there are always some who wait til the last minute. They had an assembly last week where they were told that if everyone paid their dues soon, the prom tickets might be as low as $5 each, and this includes a dinner. It's at a typical banquet type place where they hold a lot of weddings.

They are also renting limos--she is the organizing type, so she is trying to determine who is going, how big a limo to get, etc. They have a Hummer limo that fits 20 or 22 people. She said the total expenses for prom night are probably going to be $700! I thought that was a good time to remind her to start looking for a summer job. lol She has worked steadily since she turned 16, but took a couple of months off for track season. She said she would start looking right after track was done, which must be soon.

Then she informs me that the weekend after prom, she and a bunch of friends (including boys) are renting a house in VT for the weekend that sleeps about 20 people. I am not too thrilled about that. I wouldn't care if boys weren't going, but realistically since she doesn't have a BF and the boys are just her friends, I'm not worried about her having sex. I just think that w/ boys and probably drinking, things might get out of hand. I told my best friend from high school who said she wouldn't let her sons (she doesn't have DDs) go. I reminded her that we went on vacations w/ our friends after high school and there was drinking involved since the legal drinking age at that time was 18. However, drinking wasn't a big deal to us. We were just as interested in going to the beach and eating. Sometimes I think that making the drinking age older has actually increased drinking among teenagers since when we were 18, we would go out to a club to dance and maybe have 1 or 2 drinks, but not want to get drunk. If you have to drink inside and be sneaky, then there's nothing else to do but drink, I think people are more likely to get drunk caus it's kind of the focus of the night.

Well hello then! I know exactly where SRHS is because of sporting events and I know where Del Mar Heights Road is. We live very close to the school and the triplets all have their license so they do most of the driving. That will all change come August though since they are going away to college. Thats okay I miss driving Carlin to school. I don't really know East County that well though. Wow one stop light, wow.

The prom here in Simi Valley, CA ( So Cal) cost $90 a ticket and that did include dinner. Pictures were extra, we had to buy a dress, shoes and get my daughters hair done. Then about 16 kids rented a stretch limo....WOW! It was well worth it though! I went to her friends house to take pictures before they left and it was priceless!I'm going to post pics on my space ( I have it to keep an eye on my girls sites!) at www.myspace.com/nikkiaboo

I sometimes think like that, too. Otoh, I have to say I see far fewer drivers weaving on the road these days, and credit has to be given to MADD and SADD, as well as to all who voted for increasing the drinking age to 21. While it's probably true that the quantity kids drink these days is greater, at least most know not to drive after drinking substantial amounts. There are tradeoffs--more kids dying of alcohol poisoning these days, but probably fewer people dying as a result of drunk drivers. AFter considering all angles, I think I'd keep the legal alcohol age at 21.

I don't know janetlz. Plenty of medical studies show that binge drinking once a month is worse for one's health than having 1 or 2 every day. I know I don't want those drinking kids on the road, but there has to be an answer to the binge drinking that so many of them do.
