PSATs

OK, I don't know what I'm doing wrong because I always seem to be behind the eight ball! My DD is a sophomore in HS this year. I found out yesterday that one of her friends has been prepping for the PSATs since the summer. The PSATs are given during October. I had written down the date as well as the dates to sign up for them at the HS, but I had no idea that they required any prepping! I certainly don't remember taking any courses or doing anything special before I took them. I think I prepped for the SATs and I know I did for my grad school entrance exams, but certainly not the PSAT. Did your kids do anything to prepare for the PSATs?? If so, what did they do?

This is straight from my dd's school bulletin from their web site about any jrs' wanting to take the test...
You mentioned National Merit Scholarships - as your primary reason and agreed with me it is used as a prep tool (which to me is far more important - because it helps you prepare for the test the colleges really look at :

My DS, age 16, took the PSAT last year as a sophomore. He did not study other than read the directions. The absolute best thing about it (well worth the 3 hours of time and $15) was that with all that mail and emails coming in, he got very excited about college and actually started doing some research. Even if he didn't open all the mail, just getting it and throwing it in a box caused him to start the college wheels turning. He did well (but a Harvard brochure is not in his box :) but I get the impression that any student that does half way decent will get information from colleges.
He'll take it again as a junior.
