DD chose a watermelon pink satin dress for winter formal. It is floor length, strapless, and very, very simple. Aside from a little bit of ruching around the sides of the bodice, there is no ornamentation of any kind. It does have a little bit of tulle underneath, so it's a little poofy near the floor.
Do you think it would be okay for her to use black for shoes and a bag? DD already has black shoes and a black bag from homecoming and I can't think of any other color she could wear with that color that wouldn't make her look like a bridesmaid, and that would save me more running around today.
It has been so dang hot here lately (over 80 yesterday) that I think I can pass on a wrap all together.
Thanks in advance!

That sounds beautiful! I'm no fashionista, but you have my permission to use the black shoes. I definately wouldn't go with white (after all, it isn't memorial day yet!) or dyed pink (to avoid the bridesmaid look). Silver would go but, since you've got black and it's going to look nice, go with it!
Don't expect me to shed any tears over your hot spell. It was 9 degrees when I took dd to school this morning. The upside of that is, when it gets this cold, the snow sparkles like diamonds. Got to look for the positives...

Take pictures!
I personally would go with silver or clear shoes or maybe white flip flops with little jewels on them. You can get pretty cheap dressy type shoes at Payless or Shoe Express or someplace like that. My DD has worn the same shoes to every formal dance since the 8th grade - she's a sr now. I had to pretty much insist that she's getting new shoes for prom. We also bought a small silver clutch type bag at Wal-Mart in the 8th grade and she's used that one ever since except she did use her sister's black bag once. Once again, try consignment shops or Target.
I will all come together and be fine.
9 degrees?! Eeww ... I'm such a wimp anymore when it comes to cold weather. Still, would be nice to have little drop in temps here. This is kinda ridiculous.
Thanks for permission to use black. DD sprained her ankle a few weeks ago and it's still a bit weak, so I think I'll look for some black shoes with a heel lower than the pair she already has. The school has been making a lot of noise about the distance between the parking place and the party place and 'girls, make sure you wear appropriate shoes!". Last thing I'd want is for her to end up with a new sprain on a night that is supposed to be fun. (So if the pavillion IS near the flamingos, DD will match them perfectly!)
So jt, are you at all nervous about your DD's dance? All of a sudden, I'm a nervous wreck! The boy called last night to ask what color DD's dress was so he could chose a tie. I answered the phone and he sounded pretty normal -- pretty deep voice for a freshman! DD sounded pretty comfortable on the phone with him, kind of giggly, but not shy or stiff or anything. Her experience with boys is a pretty limited, so I was a bit surprised at that!
The two dads made a point of ensuring the other knew that this wasnt a 'date', just a way of two kids who wanted to go, getting to the dance. I hope that they don't get there and go separate ways! That would be a bit awkward, I think.
Okay, now I have something new to worry about today!
Anyway, thanks again.
Oh gosh, tobylady! Silver would probably look good too. I was going to look for shoes with a lower heel when I returned the other dresses today anyway, so I'll see if I there's a silver shoe that will work. Maybe a strappy sandal, since DD is not a big fan of the flip flop look. Plus, she is still nursing a sprained ankle.
BTW, I did a bang-up job with the dresses! Four of the five fit well and looked great -- it was all a matter of chosing her favorite. She is a little pale this time of year, so the pink color really looks just wonderful. Totally coincidentially, she chose the least expensive of all the dresses! Not only was it on sale, but there is an ink pen mark near the hem, and since it was the last one in her size, I got an additional 10% off! As DD said, it's near the floor and it'll be dark, so who cares?
Okay, I'm off to the mall ... again!
And if you buy her silver shoes, she will probably be covered between the black and silver for a while to come.
Oldest DD always wears flip flops to formals b/c she has very bad ankles and can't stand to be in heels for any length of time but they don't give you any support at all. Her theory is that the one time she wore heels she took them off to dance so why bother.
Too bad my girls are so different. Oldest is shorter, huge feet, and about three sizes larger than youngest. Plus she's olive complexion and dark hair. Youngest is tall and skinny with average size feet, pale complexion and red hair. The only thing they have in common is they both have boobs, which can be a problem when dress shopping. Of course, this way, I get to do all the formal shopping twice as much and we have a ball. I usually manage to convince her to try on at least one totally outrageous dress just for laughs. She managed to get me to try on one last year. It was a hoot! Hopfully, next time you will have the time for her to go with you.
(Daddio stares blankly at screen.....)
Ruching?
Bodice?
Tulle?
Poofy?
ROFL... I'm at a complete loss.
Guys have it so easy.
Allthough I did have to tell DD's "date" to tuck his shirt in at the winter formal.
(daddio mumbles...under his breath..What a slob....)
Yes, I am a little nervous about the whole thing. Her date has been in her life since right before Christmas. He's a nice kid with very nice and watchful parents, His dad is picking her up and taking her home and he's going to drop them off for dinner first. Haven't found out where - but I will. That's the part that got me. She is going out to dinner with a MALE person. It just seems altogether too grown up for me.
I can't help but get caught up in her excitement, though. She was so sad to not get to go to a Homecoming dance. Her school doesn't have one and so many of her friends got to go to dances at other schools.
I'm glad your dd's plotting all turned out so nicely. This is the FUN part of having a teen!

It is now 13 degrees. The upside to this is that I made chicken soup & I can put the whole pot out on the porch to cool so I can skim off the fat. At this time of year, it's like having a giant walk-in freezer in the house...
daddio, you got me giggling pretty good here! This should help:
Ruching? just some gathers or pleats; you know, kind of scrunched up on purpose
Bodice? the top of the dress; above the waist
Tulle? that netting stuff that garment people put in places they want fullness
Poofy? isn't that one self-explanatory? The dress 'poofs' out at the hemline a little
still giggling ...

I guess you can go put your shorts on now that the weather's so warm, eh? I need to go get a sweater myself, the temp dropped to 77 degrees.
Your DD's evening sounds like a real date -- dinner first and everything! I can imagine you are a wee bit nervous. My DH's is actually the one wigging out about this dance, That's actually a big surprise to me. Worrying, agonizing and wigging out is usually my job. And it's a job I do well, I might add.
DD's pre-dance plans do not include dinner. She and DS started a ballroom/salsa dance class last weekend (they learned to cha-cha!) and neither wants to miss the next class, which will be right before we take her to the boys' house. (We'll get her changed into her dress in between somehow!) Boys' dad will drive them to Sea World and also pick up and we'll pick DD up at their house.
But you're right, it's all exciting and the fun part of being a teenager in high school. Makes me feel OLD ...!
Well, I hope your DD has a really great time and I look forward to hearing all about it!
