Question about breasts...open with care

My 16dd recently told me that she has blood around her nipples - the skin looks like it is cracking and there is a clear/bloody oozing thing going on. I washed all her bras in hot water and bought her a new cotton lined bra, bought her a special cleanser and salve to put on herself - thinking maybe it was a hygiene issue. But I made an appt with her gyno anyway.

We saw her gyno this morning and she said something about papilloma but felt no lumps....and is sending her to a breast surgeon for further evaluation. Of course, I went onto MayClinic.com and looked up anything having to do with nipple discharge or pain and the item that fits the description best is something called Paget's Disease. So, now I'm shaking in my boots.

Any thoughts...at all?

Again, let the pros do their jobs. We all hear of those horror stories and urban legends of so-and-so being misdiagnosed and all that but the majority of the time there are good reasons for the decisions made. I believe that the reason mammograms may not be advisable for a teen is the density of the tissue. I think its that they aren't useful for diagnosis.

Clearly out of my element here.

Just a post to wish you a positive and speedy conclusion to this problem.

Without seeing the breasts or running any tests I not saying that this is absolute, but Paget's would be the last on my list of possibilities. First, there are many less debilitating illnesses that can cause this to happen and most of those are more common than Paget's. A simple fungal infection, a venereal disease, a breast tumor, etc.

I would call a dermatologist and see him/her as well. Often there are things that will be remembered by one doctor and not another. This does not make what your gynecologist said any less valuable; it merely means that you should always get several opinions before deciding anything when it comes to your child. (By the way a CA125 blood test and a breast ultrasound can rule out one of the possibilities so that you can focus on crossing the next thing off of the list so that you can find out something definitive. Your gynecologist can order both of these without having to wait to get into the surgeon.)

Sending you lots of hugs from someone that would assume the worst as well,

That would be the Human Papillomavirus (HPV)! Although there are other STD's that can present with certain nipple discharges this is not a likely candidate. The papilloma that the OP's gyno mentioned is another matter entirely.

If your daughter has large, dense breasts that may be the actual reason that the Dr. thought a surgeon would be a better consult. Sometimes the tissue is too dense to get a good picture on an ultrasound, but a good radiologist can usually get a decent look anyhow. The surgeon may have a better idea of which radiologist has a good hand and eye. Ask again!
