A pretty good friend of DD's was in a wreck over the weekend. I knew she was hurt seriously but did not realize how seriously untily last night. She is on the neurology floor and they are allowing her friends and family to visit at any hour, any number at one time, for as long as they want, even though she is in a coma. I've experienced this only once before and the doctors allowed this type of visitation so that her friends and family could come to terms with what was happening before life support was turned off. I've talked to her mom and she stated that there was very little brain activity but that she was hopeful. I'm hoping that I'm reading way too much into all this and that she will wake up and be fine but my head tells me that's probably not going to happen. She might wake up but I doubt she'll be fine. She may face a very hard, long recovery at best.
My best friend went through this when her 10 y/o was hit by a car. Her DD was my oldest DD's closest friend and it was hard for all of us. I've seen this kind of pain first hand and pray that she and her family are strong enough to handle this. I'm being very selfish but I don't want my other DD to have go through all that pain. When she was around 9, one of her real close friends died in a tornado but she handled it pretty well. There was so much distraction with all the damage from the tornado that it took a while for it to sink in to DD. She's older now and doesn't have that distraction - it will hit her quicker and harder this time. Please keep this young lady, her family and friends, and my DD in your prayers. The next few weeks are going to be a very difficult time.
Thanks!

I'm so sorry this has happened and you are all going through such a difficult time. This is the kind of thing that frightens me so much about teens driving. My ds was having a difficult time yesterday with the fact that all of his friends are now getting their licenses (he's 16) and he doesn't even have his permit yet.
I will certainly keep you all in my thoughs and prayers...
Thanks for the prayers. No one else was hurt in this accident but she is the second of DD's friends in the past three weeks to be in serious accidents. The other girl was kept in the hospital for about a week and is back home now. She is expected to fine after a course of Occupational Therapy - she had nerve damage to her right hand and will need some work with fine motor skills.
DD was going to go to the hospital yesterday but had to go see a teacher after school b/c she got a little mouthy with her (go figure). She's going to go this afternoon. She didn't go earlier b/c she thought that only family would be allowed to visit her during the restricted hours. This girl is in Neurological Intensive Care and DD did a rotation in Neurology last fall and she knew how strict they are with that visitation policy so she just figured she wouldn't be allowed in. I think that's what scares me so much about this. My pessimistic nature sees this as if the doctor's are saying - it's so bad visitor's won't can't set her back any further. I realize that the doctor's may be viewing it as if hearing her friend's voices might help in her recovery but that's just not what we typically see in this hospital.
Anyway, thanks for the prayers.
how awful.... my hugs and prayers are with you all.
Update -
They have finally limited her visitors. She is opening her eyes occassionally but not really focusing on any one thing or person. She made some sounds (not words) over the weekend. Please continue to keep them all in your prayers.
So sorry to hear this. Thoughts and prayers with your DD's friend and her family, and with you and yours.
((HUGS))

The hospital has provided the family with a Web page that they can update at any time to cut down on phone calls, visitors, questions, etc. Her father updates. Today's update stated that she sat in a chair for a little while yesterday. Her sister from out of town stayed with her the night before and she said no, no, no in her sleep a few times so the family is very encouraged by her ability to say a real word. She is apparently very responsive to one of the speech therapists in particular - a woman from her church. So this is a wonderful sign that she recognizes someone other than family.
They are working with the insurance company to get her into a L-T rehab facility. Unfortunately, this will be out of town and even with insurance quite expensive for the family. At this point, the local doctors are hoping for 80 - 90% recovery so everyone is excited about that. Of course, her parents are praying for the miracle of 100% but are just thrilled to have her alive.
I mentioned to you an accident several years earlier in which a 10 y/o died. Her mom wanted to have prayers from all 50 states. So my brother, who is a truck driver, put out the request and we believe she got them. It gave my friend so much strength to know that there were people all over the country praying for them. So please continue to give a few minutes of your time and provide some much needed strength for this family.
Thanks for your support to me & DD during this difficult time. DD knows several of the therapists that are working with this young lady and has been told that since DD is a hospital teen intern & family has consented to let interns be present, she can be present during some of the sessions but DD has so far opted not to go. She says that she isn't ready to see her friend in pain and according to her father she is in great pain at this time. Dd also feels that her presence might distract her friend.
Anyway, thanks again. We appreciate all your well-wishes.
