"Mom, can I take your 'Green Day' CD out, so I can put in Frank Sinatra?"

Too funny! DD and DH listen to the Elvis station on the satellite radio on their drive home in the evening.

DD thought I was pretty humorous on Friday when I cranked up the Justin Timberlake song that started before she even recognized it! 'Mom! You KNEW what this song was?' lolol

I am 43 and a huge music fan. I hear alot of good music of all genres and I enjoy much of the music my dd listens to (with a few exceptions). I have a long background of musical knowledge which not only allows me to appreciate new music but fully understand the music that inspired it 20, 30, 40 years ago. My dd is a dancer and therefore is exposed to tons of music as well so she is also well-informed.

So when I showed up at work one day with a mixed CD of alternative rock music from my itunes as well as CD collection a young woman I work with who is 27 or 28 was shocked that I could pull together a compilation of really good music that even she can enjoy! Yes! An "old fogey" like me can indeed appreciate amazing music! And then when I made her a second dance-themed CD with everything from Justin Timberlake to Madonna to No Doubt and Outkast she was just as surprised!!!

Yes we are a different generation of parents who grew up with MTV and dance clubs and "walkmans" and summer concert season. So its just as likely to see a fair representation of us 40+ yo parents dancing on the seats at a Killers concert as it is to see us dropping off the kids at the mall ...

Just coz we're "old" (OMG!! I didn't say that did I??) doesn't mean we have to be totally out of touch and/or very close-minded! I like a lot of the same music my DD listens to, and often listen to her CDs when I'm driving rather than grabbing one of my own.

I do not have a cd player in my car, neither do I have an ipod. When in the car, we listen to my son's choice of radio station. Since my DS is a singer, I am treated to all the most popular music of the day while he's in the shower.

But I also hear show tunes, motown, rock and roll, and right now, I'm typing this while I hear him wailing "Me and Bobby McGee" at the top of his lungs. As a kid who was raised on Frank Sinatra, jazz (my uncle is a jazz musician), classical, etc., I have a huge appreciation for all genres of music, and I love that my kids share that enthusiasm.

It's even funnier in my house - when theater comes up. A friend has just been cast in The Vagina Monologues, which I don't know and have never seen (and I know for a fact my DS hasn't seen it either). After seeing her in something else this afternoon, DS and I waited to say hello and congratulated her on TVM. My son said "Did you get the _____ monologue?" "No, so and so is doing that one. I got the _____ monologue and the ____ monologue." "That's cool," DS answers..."My absolute favorite is the _____ one."

"DS that comes from my loins, how do you KNOW this show?"

"Mom, when you're not looking, I do read."
