PSAT/SAT Prep courses really seem to be the thing these days.
I wish I had DS2 take one
Two reasons
1-his score looked good when compared to national scores(top 3%)but was nothing special in his school; there were LOTS of high scores
2-his math score sucked. I didnt grasp that as it seemed to me by the overall score not to make much of a difference(this was ACT)Now, I wonder if his desired school noticed!
DS2 didnt get into his first choice. Granted, he didnt have the grades to reflect those scores but his counselor was still surprised(he had a low B so dont think he was failing but, again, he was up against perfect GPAs galore)
The school, despite being a state University, attracts a lot of international students and students from the Chicago area. Interest apparently peaked even higher after the school made the Final Four(I never would have thought...)
Taking the prep classes in an area like Chicago is standard practice, KWIM?
He really didnt have a chance.
DS is following the same route as your DD. He took the PSAT last year as a soph., did fine, and is scheduled to take it next Wednesday as a junior. He has not enrolled in an actual course, but has been studying through the SAT preparation site. His school also has a prep session this morning for all juniors. Right now I don't see a need to spend $600-1000 for a course (we've been mailed several brochures). We'll hold off and see what happens with this score. He takes the SAT for the first time in the spring - depending on the outcome, we may reconsider then.

I didn't know there even was a SAT preparation site.
I think I'll invest in some of those books.

Leah did Princeton Review over the summer. It was a little pricey (around $1,000), but she felt like she got a lot out of it. They took a total of 4 practice tests, and then spent the rest of the sessions going over specific strategies. The feedback they get on the tests is amazing - it tells them which items they got wrong and what kind of things they need to practice. The quality of the course could vary depending on the instructor, but she had one she liked.
They did a booster session two weeks ago (for kids prepping for the October SAT), and they also have access to online practice.
The main effect for Leah is confidence. She was so anxious about the tests, and this lessened it a little. Also, it told her some areas to build up - like vocabulary is not her strongest thing - sort of a surprise to us, since she's such an avid reader, but good info to have.
If C is not wanting the class, or if you don't want to or can't pay the money, the review book probably gets some of the same effect - practice test with feedback - just needs self-motivation.
