I hear ya that you know it's a lie the moment it comes out of his mouth, because that is how it is w/ dd.

That's good advice. All our teens want to be trusted, and making a point to mention the word "trust" helps the message, that lying is no good, sink in.
DS18 would often lie about little things, but it never got to be excessive. What is worse is his habit of stating something in a serious tone, when it's really a lie, to be humorous. If he's around anyone who does not know him well they'll think he's either insane or a bigot.

My son does that sometimes...says stuff to me just for the shock value. I'm an easy mark. I'm getting better, I hesitate before I flip out when he says something like...I just joined the navy...urg.
Kim, your dd sounds like my dd. She will always come to me with the BIG stuff but lie about the silly little things.
