Sing...sing a song

OK - so I'm going to vent about something, and in reality, once you read it, you'll probably say "THIS is her problem? I WISH I had this problem!" because in all honesty, compared to DS 18's OTHER traits, this is not so bad...but I must vent to someone about it.

My son sings. He's a singer, an actor, and he does theater (any of you in central Jersey, he's doing something now!). He has a magnificent voice (this is not "Mom" talking - he really does - there are videos of him singing on Youtube if you'd like to see them). He has been singing since he was 2, has a voice people would sell their souls for, and is an incredibly talented young man (he actually made it to Round 2 of American Idol this year).

The problem? He sings ALL THE FREAKING TIME!!!!! He sings in the shower, he sings in his room at night, he sings in the living room, he sings in the car, he sings while he's taking out the garbage, he sings in the bathroom. My son has an incredibly powerful voice, and if he's singing in the shower, you can hear him 3 towns over. Sometimes, while I'm watching tv and he's on the computer, in the other room - he'll start playing songs and singing along at the top of his lungs...I can't even hear the tv!

He sings show tunes, he sings pop tunes, he sings ballads, last night I was treated to Les Mis. I went to bed, and he was in his room singing while he was on the phone (yes, other people are privilege to this wonderful entertainment as well :\. I told him I didn't care if he sang, but could he keep it down so I could go to sleep? He was quiet for about 2 minutes, then I got "I Dreamed a Dream" set at This is Spinal Tap 11.

OK - I know it's not that bad - but sometimes it's like a radio you can't turn off - it's like a bad episode of The Twilight Zone. Oh, and if I tell him to stop, he sings louder. And if I yell at him, he goes "I thought you liked to hear me sing." Sigh.

In reality, I'm not going to do anything about this - but every so often it annoys me enough to bang it out on the keyboard.

OK - rant over - back to your regularly scheduled programming.

It could be worse. Last night my 11 yo was singing along while he had his IPod on and he really can't sing very well, although I would never tell him that. Plus I didn't like the song. I said "the idea of IPods is that other people don't have to hear the music."

My mother used to be subjected to hours of me practicing piano. I wonder if she enjoyed it. lol I took lessons for 10 yrs, starting in 1st grade, then I quit in high school when I had more social activities, but I can still play. Now I never get the chance because I feel like it will always interfere w/ people watching TV, doing HW, or something. I am never alone in the house, unless you count right in the a.m. after the kids go to school and before I go to work.

At least he's good at it. He could be bad at it and just enjoy singing. See, there's always a silver lining. ;o)

ROTFL!! Twilight zone..that's good! I get where you are coming from. I don't have a singer, but I have a non-stop, incessant chatterer. Do I love her and want to hear her thoughts and ideas? yes. Does it sometimes drive me totally mental?? yes!!

LOL!!! I know what its like to live with artistic people too! My father in law is a musician and he is always whistling loudly or listening to marching band music or practising his instruments out in the garage!

My 15 yo dd is a dancer and she cannot sit still for very long. She'll just all of a sudden get an urge to bust a move and if she hears the right song on tv will be up dancing in the middle of the living room. When dance shows like "so you think you can dance" come on she is strutting her stuff. My son has often yelled at her to "quit it and sit down!!". She'll even do a little groove in the store if we are shopping and a favourite tune is playing...LOL...

I watched an episode of Grey's Anatomy recently where one of the characters, Meredith, snores very loudly. Her boyfried met her dad and complained about the snoring to which he replied "ear plugs work very well, the wax ones....".

So funny! My DS16 is also musical theater boy, in his high school's elite honors choir, and does district and state solo and ensemble competitions. He's always singing, too, and--oh, my poor husband--so am I! I'm a barbershopper who belongs to a chorus and a quartet. You never know in our house whether you'll be hearing non-stop renditions of schmalty barbershop ballads, show tunes, or some Italian or German thing. Sometimes it's annoying, but I can't imagine a house without music (although my guy stops at about 10 p.m.).

Rant away!

My DD likes to sing too ... I can hear her singing in her room while doing homework and over the sound of the shower most days. She has a friend who is involved in show choir at school, various youth theatres, etc. and when that girl is over she sings constantly too (very loudly, so we can all hear what a lovely voice she has) and I have to agree, it can get annoying after a bit.

Maybe you can suggest to you DS that he should go on 'vocal rest' to save his voice for his performances ... :-)

(he actually made it to Round 2 of American Idol this year).

Doesn't that mean he was in front of the 3 judges?
