Hi I have a very shy teenage daughter & her guidance counselor has decided to set up a special group for her(& a few other kids) for high schoolers with certain problems. Has anyone else has their kid join an in-school group like this & how did it work out? Thanx.~J

I haven't had my DD in a group like this, but in my work I've seen Social Groups used for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it's a way to help kids/teens solve situations that have come up or will come up, sometimes it's a way to cement relationships between kids (especially for shy kids). I think you should ask the Guidance Counselor how she's going to use it for your DD. If DD is open to it, I don't see a down side.

J was in a group like this when he was in HS, it was a "guys group" that consisted of guys that didn't fit with the jocks, the preps, the nerds or the academics.... kind of focused on helping them finding their niche in the world... it was wonderful for him, really improved his self-confidence.

I was in a group like that all four years of HS (I'm only 20) graduated 2 years ago. BTW Im just lurking on this board (I find alot of ppl find it helpful to get advice from someone very close to their child's age) It was very helpful to me. It was girls only and a very safe space. The group was run by a councelor specializing in the teenage years. It was helpful and really helped me gain self worth and encouraged me to foster good relationships in my life. One of the girls began destructive bahavior and it is usually poilcy in groups that parents be notified and family concelling was set up. They helped me decide on college and helped me feel confident enough to feel that I can achieve things on my own and did not have to be so self concious. My group helped me realize I could open up to people because I had something to give the world. Just my input. Good luck.
