A typical interchange with my teenage daughter when asked for the fifth time to follow through on the most minor of tasks:

Some times I think I have the most easy going kids ever.

If I think the bad attitude is for a good reason, I just walk away and give the offender some space. My daughter usually says "I don't want to talk. Please leave me alone and when I feel better, I'll talk." Most of the time, she is polite, so I just wait for her to come around.

My son is surly a lot of the time, so I really try to figure out whether he is just in a bad mood and needs to be left alone, or whether he is just being rude. If he's rude, he loses privileges. I usually have to walk away when he's being a jerk, because I am sorely tempted just to slap him! Not that I would, but I don't like feeling that way.

However, I really do believe that when parental authority is well established when a child is young (toddler/preschooler), AND the child is allowed to respectfully express disagreement with the parent, the kids end up being pretty nice kids, especially when there is a heavy amount of humor thrown in.

Absolutely! Some people wait 10-12 years too long to try to establish that they are the parent and the one who makes the rules in the house, and that's when they find themselves in trouble.

If all else failed, there's "the German look" which my children inform me I inherited from my father! LOL Doesn't take much, not a word needs to be said, but it puts the kids back in line where they should be in a second.

My "look" is the one raised eyebrow.

I dare say my "look" is pretty German looking too.

I shoot either kid a dirty look and inform that if they intend to eat, the clothes will be put away promptly and if there is any more attitude, more chores can be arranged!!
