Jumping in here late but I went online to see about Teen People for you and apparantly, they don't make it anymore. I'm not sure why, seems it would be popular. They DO however, still have their Teen People website. Which I am pretty sure is all free. http://www.people.com/people/package/0,,20045075,00.html

I used to get Seventeen when I was 14 or so. A lot of the advice column letters are obviously written by very young teens ("Dear whoever: will using a tampon make me not a virgin?" things like that). Some of the articles are a bit over the top for 17 year olds but much of it is fashion and make up and jewelry and actors/musicians. My sd gets both seventeen and cosmogirl as a subscription(it was a year of each for $15 when her school sold magazine earlier in the year). What I usually do is if I see something inappropriate as a cover story I'll go through and take out whatever we think is inappropriate(dh and I only did this once because there was a very inappropriate article about sex) but otherwise we let her read it. I hadn't really thought of using it as a springboard for discussion.

No problem; I know what you meant. And there's no way I would have given Seventeen to my DD was she was 13 either. I'm just barely comfortable with it now! But as Marie said, it seems like by the time they're "ready", it's often too late. I do understand your dilemma. There is so little that is appropriate and yet interesting for girls in that in-between age. I think when I was that age, I was really into those teen fan magazines like Tiger Beat, etc. (All those Donny Osmond/David Cassidy articles!)

I'd say Seventeen is a good magazine.

They typically have a large fashion and beauty section that often emphasize wearing clothes that flatter different unique body shapes. As well, they offer much more affordable and realistic selections than Teen Vogue does. The beauty/makeup section also presents new trends, but nothing I'd consider outlandish.

It includes the typical quizzes, embarassing moments and horoscope sections, as well as some prom stuff. There is also a section on academics/school skills and frequently college issues. There is info on how to plan for a college admission from freshman year, scholarship ideas and general planning ideas. As well, there is a "real life" story in every issue on what are frequently "horror stories" with heavy messages of prevention. Topics include teen pregnancy, eating disorders, problems with teen drinking, cyber stalker stuff.

There is a health/body image section that includes healthy eating and excercise ideas that are workable into daily life. There is also a heavy emphasis on accepting and loving your body, which is good.

The more "controversial" sections are probably both the relationship section and the sexuality section, which is part of the health section. I like that the relationship/dating section shows girls to be confident and assertive with guys without throwing themselves at them. The sexuality section is presented completely factually, and is often about topics like periods/protection, explaining topics related to female health, and yes, teen sex. Abstinence is always said to be the only 100%, but it displays the pro/cons of other types of controception, completely factually.

My daughter has had a subscription since she was 14, and I've never been dissatisfied with it.

Sorry but neither. I would not want my DD to read either (no hardship there, she has no interest). Vogue might be interesting for the photographs (We are into photography) but the articles? Nothing of interest.

And Cosmo.. NO WAY. That type of magazine is contrary to our values. It's a waste of money. A subscription to Scientific American, National Geographic or Popular Mechanics.. those are worth it.
