What is the slang term the kids use for the teens who where all black, and are depressed and slash/cut themselves for attention? I thought my daughter said NEMO... but isn't that a fish?

The term is "EMO" as referred to as emotional or Depressing children.

But wearing all black is Gothic.

EMO...I believe is the term. I think it stands for Emotion or Emotional. I looked it up on the web one time. I'm sure if there's a teen on this board, they could give you a better description.

My DS13 considers himself 'EMO'. He does favor black (mostly in the form of t-shirts and bedsheets) and skinny jeans.

Do I need to worry about him being depressed too?

Maybe your DS is confused about the lingo too, but "emo" means more than just wearing black. Those are the kids who are usually either depressed or cutting too. I believe wearing black is more of a "goth" thing. I also have trouble distinguishing among "goth", "punk", and "emo." I'm not sure what my DS told me the skinny jeans means--it might be punk. If your son is calling himself "emo", I'd keep an eye on him just in case.

My DH just told me my teenage son told him "emo" means dark (not exactly goth, but dark clothes, pale complexion) and emotionally "unstable." He has a a friend he's described using this term. Life seems to be more complex for teens nowadays.

To add to both Emo and Gothic, I'd like to add one more teen lingo term:

aww you guys are funny

EMO:
Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle.

GOTH
) a person who likes to dress and act differently to the other people in society, normally in black but some like much brighter colours. They tend to be thinkers and more often than not quite creative. They have a satyrical sense of humour, and are able to laugh at both themselves and other people. This type of goth originated in the late 80's with the "death" of punk; goths back then liked the style and the "protection" it offered and so emulated it in their own style. They listen to and appreciate all sorts of good music. They can be gay/depressed/weird/menta lly disturbed, but more often than not they are just normal people.

PUNK
it's a music movement not a style.

if you guys ever want to know what a word means it can usually be found at http://www.urbandictionary.com

I asked my 14 yo what it means and here's what she had to say:

"Emo" is short for "Emotional". And it's more of a musical term, than anything (bands like "My Chemical Romance" (which many fans deny this fact), "Hawthorne Heights", "The Academy Is...", ect. If it's not being used as a musical term, then, it's being used as a fashion statement (which is considered being "scene"... Which is bad to the real-Emos, mainly because it's considered being a poseur), or it can also be a way of life (the way they act and dress and also their beliefs).

Yes, I understand that Emos are described as "depressed teenagers that dress in nothing but black and cut themselves". But, not all Emos do this... Really... I know some Emos that are go-happy and wear bright colors, I can't say anything about the cutting though, but, then again, I know preppy people that did this, too. So, the stereotyping isn't really helping, and, most teenagers that are self-claimed Emos at the age of 13 and 14 are doing this just to, how do I put this, be a part of the crowd (the Emo crowd, which is rapidly growing due to popular franchise that is happening due to MCR... But, I think I should be calling these people "scene").

I'm not really sure if this helped at all... But, hey, I tried and gave a basic understanding of the term "emo".

the term is Emo, its short for emotional, kids who have severe emotional and psychological problems or just seeking attention they wear all black and slit their wrists and are very moody and unpleasant

i hope that helps
