What is the slang term the kids use for the teens who where all black, and are depressed and slash/cut themselves for attention? I thought my daughter said NEMO... but isn't that a fish?

Valyn,
Thank you so much for this post, I think what I needed was a "kids opinion" to make it clear for me.

My 11 yo daughter is going thru this popularity stress stage that she is beside herself that some of her ex friends are calling her an EMO. She is quite upset with this, but as a parent, I have to wonder if somewhere she isn't projecting the sterotype herself with her personality. She wanted to go to this concert this summer (forgot the name, but my 16yo says all black dressing kids go to that.). She doesn't dress that way, but I'm thinking she must be liking the music.
Her personality this passed 4 months has taken a nosedive, friends have changed and so has her interests. She had gotten her period at 10 and always seemed to be a happy girl all into cheering, friends, school stuff etc.
She is looking forward to school in a few weeks and I'm glad, maybe she will snap out of this once school starts. Her cheer coach has noticed a change as the mthers of two close friends. I appreciate your reply.

Let me simply say - emo to middle schoolers is very different than emo to high school students. We used to joke that all middle school students are bipolar particularly the girls. Ask your dd what is going on with her and the former friends - when this happened with my boys there was a reason - like the kids had really become mean.

What do you mean her personality has taken a nosedive?

Also consider that belonging to a group - fitting in and yet trying to be yourself is one of the important issues facing middle school students. Seventh grade IS the most difficult age for most kids - for so many reasons. Having a label is double edged for most kids - it means you have a "place" to belong but also can box kids in. Good Luck!

Urban dictionary has been my key to teen lingo for the past 4 years! DD is always so amazed when I know what she is talking about. She's always "Mom, how did you know that?" My reply "I'm just cool like that!" and my other favorite quote, "Moms know all, Moms see all" because of course - I'm just cool like that!

i like it. every once in a while i'll have to look something up, when i do i'm sorry i did. my friends don't use a lot of slang, they swear like there's no tomorrow though. my bff has a mouth like a sailor around me, but around our parents she's a angel.
