Teens and birth control

Hi,

How do you feel about putting teens on birth control? I have a 16 year old daughter who has a steady boyfriend. He's a great guy, but they are teenagers and hormones are a raging!! Frankly I feel like I'd rather be proactive than always be wondering "are they?" and "are they protected??". I'd love some feedback because honestly, I really did not anticipate having to deal with these thoughts just yet.

Thanks!

I'd ask her OB/gyn if the Nuva Ring might be good for her (can go 4 weeks with it in, then swap out) - I love it.

I would have a honest talk with your daughter about sex and birth control. Also have a talk with her and her boyfriend TOGETHER. Be very frank and open and discuss the pitfalls (including the emotional ones) of having sex.

Make sure she knows that you are open to her going on the pill, if she is having sex.
Also, stress the importance of using condons, even if she is on the pill. Starting to have sex at such a young age dramatically increases the possibility of STDs.

But don't assume that she & her boyfriend are having sex. They might not be but be open to the possibility.
