teens and views?

Sorry to post two in one day, but this issue is a bit distant and came to mind.

My daughter's religious school has a retreat yearly for each student. In senior year, they entire grade goes on a "retreat" which is often a charity or activism activity.

This year, the religious director has chosen for that to be a pro-life rally/peaceful protest. My daughter disagrees with this point of view and is adamant about not attending. She wants me to call in sick for her the day the grade attends.

I'm torn. I don't believe she should have to stand up for something she doesn't believe in (as much as I hold the opposite view), but at the same time, I don't believe in calling in sick for her.

Advice?

I have a question. When you say "religious school" are you talking about her high school that is a private school that is run by a particular religion or are we talking about a church school type school that is for religious instruction only?

Either way I still have the same advice. I am just wondering if we are misunderstanding what type of school this is.

Thanks for the confirmation.

It's a private Catholic high school.

Thanks for all the advice!

AFter re-reading your original post, I guess I might think a bit differently. When I saw "retreat", I assumed it was something outside of the regular school day. If it's during normal school hours, I would still have your dd say she does not want to participate, but she should then offer to do some other learning activity--volunteer, or write an essay. I would not call in to say she is sick. It's okay to be honest, and the school should respect her for it.
