Teens home alone - How long and when?

I was just wondering when you think it would be appropriate to leave a teenager home alone for an extended period of time. I have a 17 year old who is very responsible and is asking to stay home alone while I take a business trip next week. I will be gone for five days. His father lives less than a mile away and I have an adult friend who has also agreed to check on him every day.
Thanks.

Jules, we're going on the Royal Caribbean Eastern Caribbean itinerary - which is leaving from Miami and heading to first San Juan PR, then St. Martin, St. Thomas, the Bahamas and then back to Miami. It's a 7 night trip and I BEGGED dd18 to come with us, but she really didn't want to miss school for a week and she just started her new job, so it worked out. I will miss her terribly and was hoping this would be a family vaca before she zips off to college in the fall. At least we don't have to put the dogs in the kennel!
I am thinking that perhaps dd and I will take a short road trip this summer sometime. She and my dd16 and I used to always have a Girls Campout for a long weekend every year and for the past 2 years we haven't done it so maybe we should plan something.
But, as for the cruise - I am already there in my head - it's so hard to focus at work on anything but the sun!
Sounds like a nice itinerary and a wonderful trip. Is it on that big enormous RCCL ship -- Sovereign of the Seas or something like that? About 10 years ago, we owned a travel agency and I got to go on one of those short little fam cruises for hardly any $$$. DD and I are really keen on going on a real one now, but we can't convince DH and DS that it would be a fun family vacation. Oh well.
I hope all goes well, the weather holds up for you and that you have a great time!
We'll be looking forward to hearing about it in a couple weeks.
I'm kind of ashamed to admit that it IS one of those huge ships - Explorer of the Seas!
I hate the whole gluttonous idea of those ships. But it was part of my H's bonus program through his work, so we really didn't want to turn it down. Truth be told, we'd probably opt for one of those WindJammer cruises, which are on those smaller ships and go sailing or something like that rather than the RC giant megaships.
BUT, it will be cool and I know we'll have fun and I know that this may be the only way I get to see the caribbean before I'm 55! Haha!
