Basically, parents: don’t take it personally if your kid doesn’t want to be your Facebook friend. Sometimes, it’s the one place they need to assert their independence and growing identities.

I am friends with my DD, but only for the purposes of checking out her page. I don't get involved in her discussions with friends, but I did announce my presence once on her wall just to warn anyone who might be inclined to post garbage that I'd be monitoring. Her grandparents are also friends on there (she requested them).

I like looking at her pictures. She has a couple of friends who are really good photographers, and there are some beautiful shots of my DD and her friends going back to middle school.

My son has a FB account, but doesn't use it because of bullying situations he has encountered.

I have never asked my sons to be my facebook friends. I wouldn't request that they be my friend if they choose to invite me I would accept, but I don't want to put them in the position to choose...or me in the position to be rejected. Two of my sons numbers

I've been FB friends with my DD, her fiance, and one of my DSs for a very long time... I know DD and her b/f were about 16 when I got friend requests from them (they're now 19 and 20) and I think I've been friends with one of my DSs since he was 18 or 19 - which is when he got his account, he'd been on MySpace and I was a friend there for about 2 years before that.

Nope; not friends with ds18 but I do peek at what's visible on his page to the general public and do comment on some of it when I feel it's inappropriate.
