Yesterday, the Youth Pastor sent out e-mails to all the church youth asking for help with the 3:00pm family Christmas Eve service.

C16, loves to be involved and jumped right on the bandwagon.

Funny you should ask this, because our church is having a Kid's Craft Fair this Saturday, that is primarily an outreach for the community.

Julie

Service that is "forced" doesn't have the same feel to it - either for W or for you. IMHO, I'd let it go - he knows how you feel, and see the example that you and C set in providing service to the community.

There's a big difference between 13 and 16 - my guess is he'll find his own way to be of service to the community, and when he does, he'll do it with enthusiasm! I tried for a couple of years to get Leah to do some service activities with me. Nothing inspired her until she found the things she wanted to do - not even the line of "well, S (one of her bffs) is doing it" - until she found the things she wanted to do.

Now she's President of teh Temple Youth group and is on the other end of the struggle - trying to get younger kids involved consistently!

Sue,

I understand your point. But my DS would never volunteer for service if I left it up to him (and he needs the service hours for Confirmation, if for no other reason). However, when I've signed him up to volunteer for things, he has always ended up enjoying himself. He has turned out to be such a great worker when he has something meaningful to do like this, which surprises us because he's kind of lazy at home. I guess he's just one of those kids who need a little nudge.

I also agree with ej and we are in the same boat catholic huh? Anywhoo my DS found once he got there it wasn't so bad and he kind of enjoyed himself. IMO they have to learn at some point that you are always doing things you do not necessarily want to do. That you should go out of your way for others and know the feeling of really doing something meaningful in life.
