I stole this from CM Karla because I thought it was an interesting topic.

Teens with smartphones are more likely to have sex and meet others online for sex than teens without Internet access on their phones, according to a new study....

I saw that on the news last night. I kind of agree with it, at least the part about meeting others online for sex. We all know how impulsive teens can be. And since most of them have their phone with them 24/7 the ones with smart phones can check out hook up sites on a whim instead of having to wait til they get home, by which time maybe some common sense would have kicked in.

Sorry about the double post, the first time it went to an error page, so I didn't think it posted... I do agree with the thought that they may be more free to "roam the internet for sites" on their phone, but I wonder if that really adds to it or if the lessons they learn at home carry with them more. I just think the story ends up being very wishy washy, we see that sexually active teens have smartphones, which is a slightly higher rate than teens that aren't, but we don't know if smartphones make them more sexually active, or if its just happens that they have them kind of conclusion. There doesn't seem to show a huge difference suggesting that if you prohibit your teen from having a smartphone, that that is going to keep them farther away from having sex.

When it said that 17% of kids with smartphones had sex with someone they met online, but 14% of kids w/o smartphones did also that would mean to me that the smartphones had very little to do with it.

WOW, I really am out of touch when it comes to reality in the modern world.

I think the surprise for me is that 14% to 17% of these sexually active teens are having sex with strangers they meet on the internet. Sounds like a good way to end up being found dead in a field somewhere after being brutally raped and then murdered—especially for the girls. There have been several of those types of events around our area in the past year or so, just as I would assume they frequently occur elsewhere.

Also, who pays the air time charges for these low income teens?

Our cell phone provider has an unlimited voice, text and data plan that is actually cheaper than posting minutes if there are three or more phones on the account. But you do make a good point Kimmy, these kids aren't paying for these phones themselves. I'm not so sure that I'd blame it on the phone, there isn't that big of a difference between the two groups.

These fancy gadgets shouldn't be in the hands of teenagers anyway, Who pays for these? Are they Christmas gifts? Are the kids responsibile enough to have jobs to afford the plans on them, etc? I think the study is interesting, I wonder what role the parents play - Perhaps smartphones are as normal to them as teenage sex!
