Temporary Relocation to HI

Hi,

I am not a frequent "poster" to this board but need some helpful advice. My husband wants to take a temporary assignment in Hawaii, island of Oahu for about 5-6 months. I am concerned about the effects this will have on my dd who is 13 and in the 8th grade which is middle school around here. It would not be a permanent move but would come in the middle of her school year. She is pretty content here right now and hasn't ever lived anywhere else so she has all her friends here, etc although she seems to make friends anywhere she goes. I am more concerned about the quality of school experience, boredom (she is our only child so has no sibs to help out here), and being outsiders. We have travelled there on vacations and enjoyed it. I have heard the schools are tough there and that the kids/locals resent outsiders. Also, we would probably have to live in a condo in

I don't live in HI but my first thought was that if it's only for 5-6 months - couldn't you and your dd stay back and have your dh go?

If it's just for 5-6 months, why not stay where you are with DD, but plan a time together about half way through DH's assignment?

Another vote for not pulling up roots.

Sort of off topic, but this is a long distance, relatively short assignment. The total cost of

I am wondering what your DD thinks of this.

I agree this sounds like a fabulous opportunity to experience a new place, especially since it is a temporary move of only a few months. My DD had a friend who lived in HI for a few years when he was younger and he always talked about how much he loved it. I don't think it is that bad of a time during 8th grade to leave since a lot of groups and friendships change as high school starts anyway.

I see where you grew up in Prov., I am originally from Westport, MA...about a half hour from Providence....very familiar with the area.

Thanks for all your replys and suggestions to my inquiry. I am not against the move but do have some concerns and want to make an informed decision that will be best for us all. My husband is kind of "old school" and thinks it is not up for discussion and that we will all go or none will go. I would probably be more excited if our daughter were younger. I just think that at this age it will be more challenging and disruptive than it would be for an elementary age child. She is a little resistant but I wouldn't leave the

Thank you so much Leigh Ann! I have been researching a little on line and contacted a school near Diamond Head, it is an expensive all girls school that sounds wonderful if we could swing it. It sounds like they might take her if she is able to pass the entrance tests.
