I guess I'm not the right one to ask, because I have text messaging blocked on ALL of our cell phones! (Mine, my dd's and my ds's).
So no, I don't think you over reacted (only I would give him his cell phone back after a few days as long as he wasn't able to text).

Personally, I think that 8600 in 3 weeks IS excessive...
Although the number seems a bit excessive, I don't agree that taking away his cell phone and his ability to text message is the right approach.
Are you upset that he is obsessed with this girl? Well, mom, that's how "young love" is sometimes. They have to spend every waking minute with each other. It would have blown over in time, naturally.
Are you upset when they are text messaging? That is,in my opinion, more of a problem than how many times. The solution would be is to not allow him to have the phone after 11pm or before 8AM. He is only 14, after all. Also, unless he needs to phone to keep in touch with home, he is not to take the phone to school with him. That leaves after school and the weekends.
I honestly can say we don't have a problem with over-use of cell phones. DS,DD, myself and DH are on a family plan with no text messaging capability. DS, now 17, never uses his phone. I have to remind him to charge it and take it along when he has to stay late at school. DD (19) is the same way. We have never gone over the free minutes for all of us combined.
Yeah, I thinking obsessive compulsive behavior, actually.
May I ask what provider you use?
I showed him the bill and he refuses to believe that they texted that much.
Yes, I think there is an obsessive thing going on here, but I don't agree that this should be ignored.
