She probably doesn't know herself if and why she's doing this. If it were me, I'd stay out of it, aside from making a couple of very general comments. And I wouldn't buy a dress or do anything else until she had a definite date for the prom.
I have to agree with you Mitzi, guys just aren't into the whole "special dress" thing like girls are - J isn't too likely to remember the dress even if he'd bought it for her 6 months ago.
N and I have been drawing various versions of the changes we want to make in the pattern of her prom dress for a couple of months now, so the pattern envelop has been on the table for a long time.
