A Tragedy Made Worse

We learned earlier this week that two local boys, both juniors in high school, were in a serious accident en route to school. The driver of the vehicle, a Ford Explorer, was driving too fast, lost control of the car, hit a utility pole and flipped the vehicle several times.

The driver died en route to the hospital; the boy in the passenger seat was taken in critical condition to the hospital but is expected to be released today.

I can only imagine the grief of the mother of the boy who did not survive and imo, it can only be made all the worse by the fact that not only was her son NOT wearing his seat belt, he still had his 'provisional' license and should not have had a passenger in the car at all! To make matters even worser still, the rumor is now circulating that the boys were actually cutting class ...

I just have to wonder, 'what were they thinking?'. It makes me so sad!

That is sad. Kids (but not only kids) do dumb stuff. I've seen two of DS's sons, at separate times, do things I would have screamed at DS for: Failing to yield to traffic going straight at a busy intersection, and making a dangerous left-hand turn into a school parking lot; and the other was speeding about 15 miles over, in relatively heavy traffic, in that same location.

When I was in HS, I remember my bf driving in a no passing zone, up a hill on a country road when he decided it would be fun to switch into the other lane about half-way up the hill. I screamed my head off and told him I'd never get in a car with him if he ever did it again.

About 3 yrs ago when DH was doing a lot of driving between cities/states for work, he told me he started passing a semi in a no passing zone, cuz he was impatient following at a slow speed. The semi driver laid on his horn and DH pulled back over. Even grown men do dumb stuff. It seems that in some cases the frontal lobe may not be fully developed until they hit 75.

So, so sad. My heart goes out to both families - what a tragedy.
