Have you ever been on a message board where there's a "troll" - someone pretending to be someone they're not? I have - several years ago on another board - for moms of kids my DS's age. In that case, the "mom" posting had an improbably sad story, nothing ever went right, every horrible thing that could happen, happened to her. Each post she'd give out a little information, and kept people posting back to her time and again. Some folks even emailed her "off the board" and got very attached. In the end, the majority of posters came to believe she was a fake - it caused great division among board members - some folks actually tried to find her IRL and failed.

We spend so much time talking about how to keep our kids safe on the Internet, that we forget it's new to us, too. So, be wary of people whose stories don't ring true. We've got a great group here, but it wouldn't be hard for someone to fake us out.

I just recently learned that a family member was reading my board without me knowing it and became quite angry at a post where I expressed my opinion about something that happened at a family event.

Thank you for that.

I never even thought of that.I mean sometimes it takes me a while to trust to get my real issues or emotions out but i neverthought of that. Like that situation on myspace. thanks for the reminder.

I was actually 'trolled' here on this board a couple of years ago!

There was someone about 6 mos. ago who posted some outrageous story on several ivillage boards including this one, but prior to that, like you, I never thought anyone would do such a thing.

Over the years I've been on POT I think we've probably had a few trolls here, some more "inviting" (for lack of a better word) than others.

I googled "how to spot a troll" and found some really good information at this website:

I was going to copy/paste the info here, but it's really too long for that.

You know just because someone doesn't post anything in their profile doesn't mean the person is a troll. It could be that the person is practicing "safe posting". It doesn't take that much for a someone who wants to and has the resources to track someone down. And believe me, it is amazing what someone can figure out about someone. A true troll would post "made up" information about themselves so that they would be more "believable".

I have to admit I have very surprised that so many ladies post pictures of their kids and even themselves. It is lovely to see these pictures but it is something I would never do. You know, these are public forums. Anyone can access these boards: friends of the kids, acquantances, family members, co=workers....

I suppose in this MySpace/Facebook world, the photos on this message board are pretty boring to many out there. (Not to us regular posters, of course.) I never post any pics only cuz I'm afraid our shy DS18 would object if he ever found out. He asked me a couple of days ago, "you mean you still go there?" meaning this board, cuz he knew I started after he'd gotten in trouble last fall. I also use a fake screename cuz I knew he'd be embarrassed if anyone knew I posted my worries about him. Other than that, I'm as real as they come.
