Trolls

Have you ever been on a message board where there's a "troll" - someone pretending to be someone they're not? I have - several years ago on another board - for moms of kids my DS's age. In that case, the "mom" posting had an improbably sad story, nothing ever went right, every horrible thing that could happen, happened to her. Each post she'd give out a little information, and kept people posting back to her time and again. Some folks even emailed her "off the board" and got very attached. In the end, the majority of posters came to believe she was a fake - it caused great division among board members - some folks actually tried to find her IRL and failed.
We spend so much time talking about how to keep our kids safe on the Internet, that we forget it's new to us, too. So, be wary of people whose stories don't ring true. We've got a great group here, but it wouldn't be hard for someone to fake us out.

I agree with you Sue.
Thank you for that.
I never even thought of that.I mean sometimes it takes me a while to trust to get my real issues or emotions out but i neverthought of that. Like that situation on myspace. thanks for the reminder.

I was actually 'trolled' here on this board a couple of years ago!

Over the years I've been on POT I think we've probably had a few trolls here, some more "inviting" (for lack of a better word) than others.
I googled "how to spot a troll" and found some really good information at this website:

I was going to copy/paste the info here, but it's really too long for that.
You know just because someone doesn't post anything in their profile doesn't mean the person is a troll. It could be that the person is practicing "safe posting". It doesn't take that much for a someone who wants to and has the resources to track someone down. And believe me, it is amazing what someone can figure out about someone. A true troll would post "made up" information about themselves so that they would be more "believable".
I have to admit I have very surprised that so many ladies post pictures of their kids and even themselves. It is lovely to see these pictures but it is something I would never do. You know, these are public forums. Anyone can access these boards: friends of the kids, acquantances, family members, co=workers....
