Trolls

Have you ever been on a message board where there's a "troll" - someone pretending to be someone they're not? I have - several years ago on another board - for moms of kids my DS's age. In that case, the "mom" posting had an improbably sad story, nothing ever went right, every horrible thing that could happen, happened to her. Each post she'd give out a little information, and kept people posting back to her time and again. Some folks even emailed her "off the board" and got very attached. In the end, the majority of posters came to believe she was a fake - it caused great division among board members - some folks actually tried to find her IRL and failed.

We spend so much time talking about how to keep our kids safe on the Internet, that we forget it's new to us, too. So, be wary of people whose stories don't ring true. We've got a great group here, but it wouldn't be hard for someone to fake us out.

I have often posted TMI and then gone back and deleted some or all of my original post. I may be emotional about a certain incident and post it all and then I get paranoid and go back and regret putting it all 'out there'.

There was a troll on a board I used to visit, Raising Girls, years ago and it didn't cause anyone any heated discussions, but most of us felt betrayed I think.

I am sometimes hesitant to respond to a post because it may seem doubtful or just too hard to believe.

Oh, geez, what a relief to know I am now the only one who thinks about these things

No back up plan here but, yes, it has occurred to me

Really, zz? I am not so sure...Haha, I am LMAO over here because it's just so funny to me. Unless the troll is causing major grief, who cares? They are still offering an opportunity to share thoughts, ideas and some thought provoking conversation, don't you think?? Haha. zz you're funny.

Not sure I agree completely...I think that, troll or not, it can be pretty disruptive.
