Almost alll of the kids in my dds old school were either tutored or had a parent who oversaw their homework.

Connor is 13 and a high school freshman.
My dd(16) usually doesn't want/need my help.
I've been completely "hands off" with my DD's homework for about 2 years now, other than checking periodically to see that it's done and checking her grades every couple of weeks.
You say,
School is THEIR job, not mine, and it's preparation for college and adulthood for them to handle their job independently.
That is absolutely true that school is their job not the parent's.
I would find out what your school offers
We are in public here and I have no experience with private, but here the math teachers team up so that there is always a math teacher available before or after school. Kids at any level can come in for help at those times. There are also classes that offer retakes on tests IF you attend a help session.
My son was not one to tell my these things so I have to investigate on my own. He has language and learning problems but only one of his classes is considered special ed so he is pretty well mainstreamed and needs every break in the book. Here we have teachers who give 5 points for bringing in a box of kleenex!
Check out all those options first(again, no idea if they exist in private schools-we are subject to 'No Child Left Behind' so they go above and beyond; one High School is jazzing up a 12 yr old car and holding a drawing for it from names of those who had less than three unexcused absences a semester in an attempt to increase attendance)
I would help my boys only if they asked, and if I were able to.
Being an adult isn't just knowing all the answers, but knowing where to go for help when you know you do not know the answers....
I agree wholeheartedly, and I'd never discourage my kids from asking questions, either of myself or of the teacher.
