I'm mostly a lurker but had to tell you how much I respect this hard decision you all had to make for his future. I'm keeping you and Jason in my thoughts.
I am so glad he is taking a semester off-for you! Sure, I wish the best for Jason, but I dont know how you could have functioned with him away at school. Surely you'd want to run over there all the time-it would be awkward for your entire family
This was an excellent decision for all involved; he will get the help he needs and the rest of the family can rest easy knowing that's what's happening
Hang in there-he has a supportive family who has their eyes open to the issue-he will beat this!
Guys absolutely struggle with eating disorders -- my BF had one throughout the first 3 years of high school. It stunted his growth tremendously -- when he finally started eating right again, he shot up about 5 or 6 inches.
Anyway, good luck to your son, Pam. He'll pull through, I'm sure.
I am glad he is getting the help he needs. My step sister suffered (and still struggles with) Anorexia and bulimia. She went into the same kind of program after her freshman year at college. She attended the Penn State main campus, and it was just too much for her, along with some other issues she struggled with. It helped her tremendously, but it IS a lifelong battle, and she continues to attend support groups and so forth. Best of luck to him and a hug to you!
Pam!!! I've been away for the last 10 days so am a bit late in sending you and your family positive thoughts. I drove over 1,600 miles last week, so had lots of 'thinking' time and did wonder how Jason is doing somewhere down the road. Has he started the program already? How is it going?
With the support and love he has from his family, plus his desire to get better, the odds that he'll beat this thing and move forward are pretty good! {{{hugs to you all}}}.
Kind of an aside, but related, earlier this month, DS went in for his annual physical. You may remember that I have been concerned about his 'chubbiness' for a while now and also that he seems to have entered that charming period in life known as 'puberty'.
Well ... the doctor really came down on him this year about his weight and I was a wee bit annoyed with her -- she even suggested that he keep a 'food log' and that she would go over it with him -- and that I start buying 'low-fat cheese' Blech. Like that's gonna happen. He has grown nearly 4" since his last check-up, played tennis 2-3 times a week over the summer, swam, etc.
I know she was just doing her job, and all the concerns about childhood obesity, etc., are huge issues in the health-care world, but I still didn't like the message she was sending to a young person about food and weight. It sort of made me think that comments like hers were the ones that actually set these kids on the road to eating disorders. Especially when there are 2-4 'growing' years left.
It will be interesting to hear what Jason's thoughts are on things like this. I hope you will keep us updated on his progress.
