Vacationing with just one teen.

We are currently investigating springbreak trips. Oldest DS is in college now and won't be going. We normally go with 2 other families, and one family has 2 boys, but they are thinking of going somewhere I don't want to go. We have always wanted to do an out of the country, all-inclusive. The one we found sounds like a blast, but not sure how much fun DS, who will be 16, will have by himself. I'm thinking not much. For those of you who travel with just one teen, how did that go?

What kind of trip are you planning?
I'm guessing that if you have a "busy" kind of vacation, where you're snorkeling and hiking and being active, your son will be fine with just his parents - after all, he's going to have been living alone with you for several months by then. OTOH if you're considering the sort of vacation where you lay on a beach and take it easy, I'd agree that your son could be pretty bored.
We haven't vacationed with other families since our kids were quite small. Our vacations for the past few years have been the kinds of things you'd do if you were traveling sans kids - visiting castles and churches and ruins in Ireland, Scotland, and England, more recently taking hikes and historical tours in California. We started this in 2008 when our kids were 8, 13 & 16. Our one concession to our preteen son was going to Universal Studios during our vacation in California this summer. Naturally that was his favorite part of CA, but he's had a great time everywhere else we've gone.
I’m jealous and envious. LOL
If I had this wonderful opportunity, I would let the kid figure out where and what we will do on this trip.
Until two years ago, all of our vacations were to Florida beaches and Walt Disney World because that’s where the DDs wanted to go. Then two years ago, the kids had a week off between summer and fall classes and they wanted us to go with them on the dead president’s tour. We visited the libraries and graves of Eisenhower, Truman, Hoover, Lincoln, Jackson, Clinton, Johnson, Bush 41, and King Elvis. After Elvis we visited the Civil Rights museum over at the Loraine Motel where MLK, Junior was slain. Last summer we stopped at the MLK center, Carter center, Ft Sumter, Cape Hatrous, Kitty Hawk, Old Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, Mt Vernon, Washington DC, Philadelphia, NYC, FDR library, Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Monticello, and Appomattox. This summer we hit the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and Mount Rushmore. This is a great country to visit. LOL
My point is that I would go to Mars or Venus to spend time with the kids. Besides hubby and I have had a blast on all these trips—places we never considered going.
Wherever your DS takes you, you will remember it fondly because you were with him. Be sure to come back and share the details of it with us.
