I remember mischief night fondly as a teen when we played tricks on neighbors.

No. I never let my kids participate in mischief night. Our town has over 50k people. It sounds like your old town had some "controlled" fun, but that doesn't really happen here. One year, when my dd was little, some kids stole our pumpkins and rolled them down the street, smashing them to pieces. My dd was very sad and I told her, "when you get older, you remember how it felt to have your stuff taken and ruined and don't do that to other little kids". Since it's not an organized event with lots of supervision around here, I don't allow the kids to do it. I don't think going out with the intent of causing problems is a good idea.

I don't approve of mischief night and I don't allow my son to participate.

We had "Mat night" as a kid but that is it. The 30th of Oct the kids would flip people's welcome mats over. But that was over 45 years ago.
We don't have anything like that anymore.
