my daughter is a voracious reader but has a tendancy to reread everything on her book shelf a hundred times or more...

just wondering what everyone's kids are reading now - maybe i can get some ideas for new books to get her...

thanks!

My DD alternates between reading classics (harder to read) and real junk. So right now she is reading "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath and the "Fearless" series by Francine Pascale. This summer she read "Flowers for Algernon", "Madame Bovary", "L'Etranger ", and "1984". Don't know if anyone else's teen would be interested in any of these, but she loved them all.

Sorry, ds14 isn't a reader except when he has to for school (and usually does enjoy that except they sure have odd ones this year - very depressing stuff freshman year!). For him, if I find him reading, it's something like a book on gaming, in particular right now it's on Halo hacks. Sigh. But then dh isn't a book reader either; he's a voracious technical journal/magazine reader. I'm a techy too, but I leave that at work!

Since she started high school last fall, my DD hasn't had much time for leisure reading. This summer she had two books to read for her advanced English class and two for her AP Euro class. Good thing she likes to read and likes history, too.

Since her required reading is fairly 'heavy', her for fun reading is pretty lightweight. She has been reading the Sue Grafton/Kinsey Millhone mystery series for a while -- A is for Alibi, etc. Aside from the first installment -- which does have a fairly explicit sex/love scene -- the books are all pretty harmless and she seems to enjoy them.

She liked the Traveling Pants books, Harry Potter series and leans toward books in the fantasy genre.

Oh, and she loves, loves, loves, books like Pride & Prejudice, etc.

Blindness by Jose Saramago (might be too heavy for young teens). It's a fantastic read.

Your dd sounds like mine. I can't keep up with her reading habits. The local library never has the books she likes so we end up buying alot of books. And she rereads them over and over because I honestly cannot afford to buy books as fast as she reads them. She has read everything from the Harry Potter series (multiple times) to Princess Diaries series, to a series called "Young Wizards". She likes fantasy novels alot. A good series she recommends is the "Dark Materials" series by Philip Pullman. She has recently read alot of "chick-lit" like:

"I'd Tell You I Love You But then I'd Have to Kill You", "Secrets of a Hollywood Star", "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen", "Avalon High" -- these are more humourous books. My dd likes them because they don't deal with ultra-serious topics like teen anorexia or drug usage or depression. They present a more positive and humourous outlook on the life of a teenage girl.

Good luck!

Mine is strictly a "fantasy" reader. Right now she is reading the Terry Pratchett "Discworld" books, which are light and very funny. If you daughter likes that genre, I'll get my DD to recommend some more titles/series for her. My DS, when he reads, likes the Forgotten Realms books (fantasy again).
