Cool doesn't mean buddies...like I said, its a fine line...

Right now I have a basement full of 17-19 year olds playing Guitar Hero. Looks like fun, but I'm too spastic. My son went to school to the gym and home. He's off work now until Sunday and some of his buds are home from college. I better hit the grocery store tomorrow or they'll be gnawing on my turkey.

The next 5 days are vacation here.

Upstairs I have 4 girls, 12-15...they are chatting away, doing hair etc. all going to a movie tonight. DH is doing the driving, which means I'm off duty as soon as dinner is done.

Now that's cool...

I didn't meant to equate cool with being buddies. I'm just saying cool isn't necessarily what I'm aiming for!

Personally I've never aspired to be a "cool mom".

Diamonds, yes I think you hit the nail on the head. I think kids know and appreciate the adults who take a genuine interest in them--without necessarily trying to be their equals. My DD told me--to my surprise--that a group of her friends were saying how they like my personality because a couple of times I've made them laugh by "dishing the dirt" with them. They see me participating in their activities all the time, in our case it's marching band, and I think many of them see me as a mom they can turn to anytime. I guess to some of them, that might be considered cool.

I'm in middle school, but I also spend a ton of time w/ high schoolers as an over-involved marching band parent! =)

I just asked N what is a cool mom, and here's what she tells me:

- A cool mom does not try to be "one of the girls" - she's already lived her own teen years and doesn't need to do it again.

- A cool mom always has pizza in the house

- A cool mom knows when to let the small stuff go, and take the big stuff seriously but not go psycho over it.

- A cool mom doesn't try to be cool.

Take n Bake is a cool idea...we have nothing like that here...

For a while, I'm talking years back, DH was into making his own pizza. He'd practice making dough over and over. He got pretty good at it and then he lost interest, figures...
