DD14 got accepted to a summer@college program for this summer. She doesn't know yet, because the email came to my address, but she will be soooooooooo psyched!! It's staying in dorms (she's never even done sleepaway) and going to "college" classes. It's near my parents' house, so she can get signed out for dinner with grandparents if she wants (although she may be having so much fun that she doesn't want to).

Now just to figure out what she's doing for the REST of the summer!

Wow, that's wonderful. I'm sure she will be excited but maybe a little scared at the same time. Will there be any other kids from your area going? Youngest DD went to basketball camp one summer at a college that was 5 hours away and didn't know a soul. She was 10 at the time and it was a huge campus. She managed to lock herself out of her dorm room in only a towel - she used the girl next to her room's phone to call me and ask what should she do. I called the RA in the dorm and she let her back in her room. That was the only mishap the whole week and 1/2 but the next year she choose to go to camp at a school a little closer to home (30 minutes). DH and I took her new puppy to visit mid-week. She probably didn't learn as much but I really think she had more fun.

Congrats to your DD!

Sue,

What exactly is summer@college? I don't know that I've ever heard of it! DD and I went to a college fair over spring break and we learned of a summer program in US History/Studies at the College of William & Mary that she is VERY interested in attending, but the requirement was for a junior in hs, I think?

Is your DD attending something like that? It sounds really cool.

As far as I know, she won't know anyone until she gets there. Interestingly, she's not at all nervous (although that may happen when it gets closer). It's 4 hours from our home, but only a half hour from grandparents and favorite uncle! So if she does get homesick, she can call them to take her out for dinner or whatever.

There's no way she could have done this at 10 or 11. Kudos to your daughter to be able to even try it!!

LOL I just didn't type in the name of the college so it looks weird in the post!

This is a university that has a very rich summer program for HS students of all ages. They have 1 and 2-week courses, in just about every topic you can imagine. The kids live in the dorms, eat in the dining hall, and live a college life (with lots of supervision!). Older HS students can do a 7-week course and/or earn college credit.

It's about four hours from our home, but less than an hour from my parents and my brother. It seems like the perfect getaway - one with a grandma within a half hour!!

Hey Jules,

A lot of the UC campuses have summer programs for high school students.

Huh. Well, whadd'ya know? We're less than an hour from the UCSD campus and didn't know anything about these summer programs! It's probably a little late for this summer (and besides, I am looking forward to having her around more!) so perhaps I'll look into something for next summer.

Thanks for the info!

Jules
