I don't often think of myself as an old fuddy duddy, but when I heard the words to a song that I downloaded onto my phone, I was embarrassed. Late last night I was browsing the Sony songs on my cell when I came upon the music to "My Band" by D12 and thought that it had a catchy beat and so I downloaded it and set it as my default ringtone. This morning I thought I'd find out who D12 is and what the words to the song are. Well let me tell you that I was surprised at the extent of their rauchiness (is that a word?). It really bothers me that some kids listen to music like this on a regular basis. The lyrics are really bad. Even I, an adult, am embarrassed to hear the lyrics.

Mily,
I could go on and on about this. I'm assuming that D12 is a rap band? They tend to be the worst for raunchiness. I'm "lucky" (?) that my teens don't like rap, but instead are into the new heavy metal, which for your information, according to my teenage son, is no longer called "heavy metal" as that would be an "old term" for us old timers, you see. It's now called just hard rock, or sometimes, "screamo". And believe me, they do screamo. Alot. I am forced to listen to this in my car whenever they are riding in it with me - my daughter's favorites are the bands Hym (sp?), Story of the Year, Avenge Sevenfold, Disturbed (and I am, by their name). I mostly worry about the sometimes violent content of the lyrics - some songs about death and dying.
But my whole issue is that I have always enjoyed my own music - played for years in bands, etc. and have a problem with censorship. So far, I have not been able to be a hypocrite in this regard. I too well remember what it was like to be an angry teen, and rock was made for the young, angry and rebellious. But still, I worry. So I'm right there with you. If its not the sex, then its the violence. I guess we have plenty to worry about in this day and age, but don't forget not too long ago our parents were saying the world had gone to hell in a hand basket all because of rock and roll. Yeah. Right.
haha! That's too funny. I've heard that song and didn't care for it either. I can just imagine you, an old mom, with your cell phone ringing that song in the middle of the grocery store. That would be so funny...
Dragonfly, Disturbed used to be my favorite band! I don't like them as much anymore, but i still listen to them sometimes.
Payasa, just like you, my DD laughed and laughed when I told her the story. I really like the beat of the song and since it doesn't include the words, I'm thinking of keeping it as my ringtone. Besides, I doubt that most Moms I may run into at the stores will even recongnize the song. LOL

I had a similar thing when DD was really into Eminem a couple of years ago - they lyrics were offensive in places. But when I listened to whole songs, I came to admire him a bit - some deep and very poetic thoughts in those songs. I talked with DD about the lyrics but decided to let it go. People were shocked that I knew most of the words to "Lose Yourself" and turned it *up* on the radio!

My DSs have been listening to Eminem for a long time.
Except for System of the Down, I haven't heard of the other bands. My kids like such a wide variety of music that I never know which is their current favorite band. They like older bands such as Led Zepplin and newer ones whose names I don't even know half the time. LOL

I agree, Sue, Eminem is talented. If he would just keep the raunchiness out of his music, I would enjoy it more. I find that he has a sense of humor which he often brings into his songs.
