You All Have Been Busy!

We got back last night after 10 days away -- a week of camping at Mammoth Lakes in the Sierras, then a long weekend with my parents to celebrate my dad's 71st birthday -- and you've been busy here! Its taken me a while to 'catch up' with the board.

Just because I don't want to post a gazillion different messages this morning, I'll put my shout-outs here. Hope you all don't mind ...

Pam: I wondered how everyone got pics on the posts; it took me a while to find your post about the new ivillage feature. Now I've got to find a good photo to insert ...

mom_dragonfly: So I'm not the only one who 'forgets' to make dinner? Or who doesn't know her across-the-street neighbors? LOL! That makes me feel soooo much better! Oh, and my DS desperately needs a haircut, too! Congrats on your DS' band success! What do they call themselves?

ljd_mom: 'yeah, no'? LOL ... don't think I've heard that one yet, but maybe a variation thereof? How has the last few weeks of summer gone? When does your DD start school again?

tobylady: How is your DD's first week of college going? Where did she actually end up? And I love your response to diamonds about raising our teaching our babies to fly.

heartsandroses: Has your DD started her culinary program yet?

payas: How are things with the 'older man'? :-) I think Chelsea is like you and can see her being interested in guys 3-4 years older than she is. If she actually wanted to date one now, however ... hhhmmm ... I'd have to think about that! Anyway, nice to 'see' you again. I hope your jr year goes famously!

iteadrinker: Thank you for the info on the cervical cancer vaccine. I don't think I was aware there was one. I don't think I'll get my DD the vaccine just yet ... but definitely will when I feel the time is right.

cat_momma: I'm so happy you and your DS are reconnecting and having a good time together. Here's to many more ... {{{raising my coffee cup}}}

diamondslb: When you figure out just where the time has gone, let me know, okay? I drove over 1,600 miles last week, so had lots of 'thinking' time ... and one of my thoughts was how in just a few years, DD would be gone and off to college. It will be a bittersweet time, I know. I spent a few days with my parents and they had lots of pics of DD and DS around the house and one in particular hit me hard. In the photo, DD was about 6 and DS 3-4, and they were walking away from the camera, holding hands. In the photo, DD towered over DS and now, he's taller than her by just a tiny bit. A sweet memory ... I am reminded just how fleeting childhood really is.

And to everyone else: Good morning!

Julie

Edited to add an update on Colorado move ... DH had a phone interview yesterday for a position (with current employer) that would allow him to work from home, from wherever he wants. All indications are that he will get an offer. He wants to put the house on the market NOW. I want to wait until we have a definite plan. DD saw plenty of 'scenery' (cute guys) hiking, backpacking and fishing and since those activities are all quite popular in Colorado, and she enjoys them too, she's all for it! DS is now asking 'when' we move as opposed to 'if' we move an seems very comfortable with the idea now too.

Welcome back, Julie. Are those your kids in the photo? No fair, you're supposed to put a picture of yourself so I get to "meet" you.

Believe it or not, they call themselves "Fire in the Morgue". Lovely, eh? Kids these days...

Julie, sounds like you all had a well spent 10 days! I'm glad to hear dd is more receptive to the possibility of a move. It sounds like a lovely area. Post pix!

My dd will not begin her college until October 2nd, so we have a few more weeks before I weep all the way home...lol. Last night dd and I went to bed bath and beyond and packed the shopping cart with great stuff that she will need at school. We were able to get about $220 worth of stuff for only $137 - we had coupons, a gift card and a store credit so we did all right! We don't have much left, and we're going to wait until after we see her dorm room to figure out if a shelf will fit and where we would put it. She's in a quad and it will be tight on space, and the school doesn't allow extra furniture anyways, so we have to be precise in what we choose. Also, she received a letter informing her of the strict dress code (that we were not aware of) so now we have to go buy her a few business-y type of outfits. It seems like the expenses just keep coming. Thanks for asking.

Yeah ... those are my kids, not me! I honestly did try to find a pic of myself that I liked well enough to post, but if you can believe this, I went through nearly 2 years of digital photos and not only are the vast majority of them of my children, but the few that actually have me in them aren't so great. (Ha! What a surprise!) I found myself in the unfortunate position of having to have a cornea transplant about 4 years ago and since then, find my eyes are extremely sensitive to sunlight -- I can't even step outside without dark glasses. As a result, every picture I have of myself is in dark glasses and a hat! All you see in my hat and my chin!

But now that I know I can crop the heck out of these photos to get them to fit, I'll try again ... maybe!

Well ... 'Fire in the Morgue' is much better than 'Blood in the Morgue' or 'Bodies in the Morgue' or 'Murder in the Morgue' or .... okay, I'll stop there. What sort of music do they play? Do they have their music on the web anywhere?

Oh my ... how exciting for your DD -- and a little heart-wrenching for you, I imagine. But, at least you have her for a good 6 weeks still. I'm sure you'll enjoy every minute with her. I'll try and remember to send you some e-hankies around the 1st of October :-)

What great deals at BB&B. My SIL & BIL did a similar sort of thing early in the summer there. They got new pots & pans, knives, and a bunch of other kitchen accessories for hardly any money at all.

Out of curiousity, what will your DD use the business attire for? Does she wear the normal chef clothes for classes -- checkered pants and white tunic? Is she going to specialize in a specific 'food' area -- cakes, pastries, etc.? After she graduates, where does she want to work? Sorry to be so nosy, I just think this is a fascinating field to go into! My past is checkered with employment stints in hotels and resorts so this sort of thing is very interesting to me!

They play what could best be described as "alternative rock" I suppose. It's kind of loud, and there is some screaming and since he's the singer I've repeatedly warned him about his vocal chords (I was also a singer in my day). Anyway, he was all excited last night b/c they've got a design for t-shirts. They made some money at the last show and are "saving" it to order a bunch of t-shirts to sell at their concerts. It's amazing to me how much of this they are doing on their own, I think they're "learning" alot, whether they realize it or not.

In addition, after the first day of school, he was surprised to see how many at school had already heard of "his" band.

Hi! Welcome Home, and thanks for asking about my "older man" lol. Our schools just started yesterday, and I can already tell I'm going to be VERY busy (1.5 hours of homework on the first night..!) So I don't think I'll have time for anything...but it's also a convinient reason to put things off. I've always liked and got on better with people/guys older than me, but none of the relationships was anything serious.

That's so exciting about your move to colorado! A week ago I took a vaction there to visit my aunt. She lives outside of denver, and we also rented a cabin in the mountains. I realized how much I LOVE the area! I would absolutely love to live there some day.

Not nosy, thanks for asking - who doesn't love talking about thier kids accomplishments and goals!

DD is going to get her bachelors degrees in Baking & Pastry Arts. She was going to open a cafe afterwards (and after saving money by working for someone else, of course). But now she's thinking she would like to be a culinary teacher at a tech high school or junior college. All she would have to do after she gets her culinary degree is get her teaching certification in whichever state she resides. Very cool. Again, she surprises me.

Since she was little she's spent almost all her spare time baking, etc. Over the years she has created some really and truly amazing desserts, predominantly chocolate specialties. Yum Yum - we should all weigh 800 lbs by now!
