As much as I'd like to think that's something covered more by parents, I think it's more appropriate once in HS. JMHO - seems waaaay too young/soon. But then I thought it was early when ds had the beginnings of the teachings at the end of 4th grade when he was 9, although they did it in a very age-appropriate way.

Yet again, the Neanderthals are trying to stir up controversy without presenting--or more likely--without KNOWING the facts.

I think age appropriate sex ed in school is great. I think Sabr was probably right in that there may have been an article on it blown WAY out of proportion. My boys are 21 and 24 and I've talked to a lot of moms and kids over the years and I've never once heard IRL of a classroom of 11 year old 5th graders putting condoms on bananas. In our area they do the puberty presentation at that age (boys in one room, girls in another with same sex parents invited). Very well done from what dh said - talked of changes both physical and emotional and talked about sex/reproduction on a higher level. In 8th grade they have a more comprehensive sex ed class that discusses birth control but again - as far as I know they don't have live demonstrations. And then again in 9th grade, etc. At any time I belive parents are able to sign their kids out of the class. But bottom line - with kids going through puberty earlier they are having sex earlier and they need to have this information before they need it, not after the fact.
