Should my 7 yr old be brushing his teeth by himself now? I let him do it, but then step in towards the end because I don't think he does it thoroughly. Should I be letting him do it all alone? I try to make him do it in the morning before school, but it's kinda hard sometimes since we are usually in a rush. His dentist advised flossing, but he hates it. What does everyone else do?

My dentist told us that we should be helping them until they are at least 7. My two oldest do it themselves, but I am still bringing them their toothbrushes with paste on it in the livingroom while they watch t.v. It's hard getting them to break from the t.v. somtimes and I figure, so long as they are brushing, they can sit there until a commercial break or until the show is done. This way, at least I know it's getting done.

We use the kids Sonicare toothbrush and he does a pretty good job with it.

I let the kids do it in the evening and I do it in the morning.

I am SO glad you brought this issue up! Kaydon is 7 as well, and we are going through this with him. He thinks he is ready to brush his teeth himself. Me being the OCD Momma with the dental tools for my own teeth definitely double check him each time, and feel that he doesn't quite get the job done. We did however purchase the Listerine blue mouthwash, which coats his teeth, and shows where he needs to really brush! I say, continue to moniter, until he starts showing signs that he is ready.

That's a really good idea about the timer! My boys had toothbrushes that had a built in one, music played for 2 minutes. Problem was that the brushes were too small, not to mention the music was a tad annoying!

This is our little teeth brushing routine ~

1) I get the bedtime story book and take it with me to the bathroom after we say prayers

2) I supervise the kids putting toothpaste on their toothbrushes and getting them wet (they used to practically wash off all the paste!), then I set the timer and say go ...

3) Then I

We've been having our boys use Listerine Smart Rinse (I think that's the brand).

We have two boys, six and seven and both have issues with brushing their teeth; mostly they don't want to do it! However it flucuates back and forth with them doing it or my husband

hello!! we dont brush in the morning because like you we are usually pretty rushed and dont have time. we brush at night usually right before bed. she mostly does it, but then like you, i help her out at the end to make sure she got to the back. we dont floss-i know we should, but i dont like it myself and i can just imagine trying to get a 6 yo and a 9 year old to try and do it. take care!!
