I have a almost 6 year old and and 8 year old (who has an Autistic Spectrum Disorder). Both boys. They refuse to stay away from the kids that bully them and get them in trouble. We live in an apartment complex and can't wait til the day I can find a new apartment. These kids are nice sometimes but other times are so mean and today one was swearing so loud I could hear it through my window.(I live on the second floor. There is a big grassy area where they can all play but they can't ever seem to just get along. Everyday there is someone crying because of something. I know I can't lock my kids up in the apartment but just can't wait for winter when they won't go out as much.

You know...my DS is the same way..I don't think he realizes when someone is being mean to him.

I'm kind of in the same situation as you and can't wait for winter too. My son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS and had a severe speech delay when he was 2 and received a lot of therapy and had a home program. I think this put a stigma on him in my neighborhood because some of my neighbors told their kids not to play with him (nice, huh?). Well, he is 6 1/2 now and no longer has the diagnosis (I actually think he was overdiagnosed). He's very sociable and wants to have friends and play. Lately he's been playing outside with these kids, but they don't act very nice to him and kind of ignore him. He tries to play with them anyways.

Well, today, when we came home from the grocery store they were all outside. As soon as they saw us, they ran into the garage to hide so he wouldn't see them. He saw them though and ran over. They all ran away from him totally giving him the brushoff. He finally got the hint, and stormed into the house teary-eyed, threw himself on the floor face down and cried. It just breaks my heart to see this happen. I told him those kids are jerks, and not to play with them anymore, but he still insists on it. Poor thing is desperate for friends.

Yes, my son too longs for companionship. He's an only child and he'll also overlook when someone is mean because he just wants to play so bad.
