my daughter is also turning 8 in a couple weeks. we went through something similar last year. i decided to throw a my daughter her first slumber party and invited 9 girls. i figures atleast 5 of the 9 would show. in the end 0 showed. the day of her birthday i called a friend and we took our kids bowling and called it her birthday party. i know exactly how you feel. i think my feelings might have been more hurt than hers. and like you none of the parents let me know their children were not comming.

Its sooo frustrating when people don't RSVP. I usually put my email address on the invites now and for some reason, people seem to be able to do that, but not pick up the telephone. I swear that we will have a whole generation who will not know how to have a "real" conversation. But that's fodder for another post.

Have you checked out the local movie theater? Our local theater has a birthday special: Each child gets admission to the movie, soda, and a small snack. It's relatifely inexpensive and your daughter could invite those two or three special friends. Our movie theater (Clearview Cinemas) even put the b'day child's name on the marquee. That's quite exciting for them. You may have to resign yourself to the fact that if they don't get back to you, you may have to call them.

PS: At my sons' school, if you aren't inviting the whole class you're not allowed to pass out the invites at school and I think that's fair. Our school puts out a directory, so it's easy to have everyone's address.

Don't take the RSVP thing personally.
