Do you let your 6 yo dd...

wear a bikini? I've said no up until now because she's in such a hurry to grow up that I want to hold her back where I can. She's into fashion, she wants to be like the blonde singer types on Disney Channel (too bad she has dark brown hair), wants to be "cool", etc. I had sort of plotted out a route through long tankinis, shorter tankinis, and then bikinis (within reason) many years from now. However, last week a friend gave us some hand me downs and there were a few bikinis in the collection. There is one that fits her now and actually looks pretty cute. I just feel like she's too young to be showing that much skin. If I let her wear a bikini now, where do I draw the line when she's 12 and 14? On the other hand, what do I do with the suits we've been given if we don't use them? I guess we could donate them. We really don't have anyone in particular we hand things down to.

Thoughts, reactions, ideas?

Hmm.. I'm not sure. I think it would depend on the style. My dd had one a year ago and it was "boy shorts" and a sports bra type top. Since it wasn't to skimpy, I was ok with it.

When she did wear that one, I told her that if she's walking around just playing (like with friends outside while taking break from sprinklers) that she needs to put a tank top on and shorts.

I would just donate it if you don't want it.

My 9-year-old DD has always worn tankini's. They are a marvelous invention in my book (coverage of a regular swimsuit but you don't have to get naked to use the restroom!) In our case, DD is very modest and wouldn't wear a bikini to save her life. She doesn't like her belly to show (even though I'd kill for a flat little belly like hers lol.)

Personally, we wouldn't do bikinis at 6 or even at 12. They just aren't practical swimwear.

Yeah, I agree. My daughter had a tankini that was great, but I wouldn't do a bikini. I also don't do crop tops yet either. My daughter is only five and I don't see any reason to start that at this early of an age.

In the backyard wouldn't bother me, but there ARE sexual predators out there who view that sort of thing as a turn-on, so the easy answer for me is no.

Wishing you lots of luck in your decision.

All it took to convince our dd that a 1 piece suit is best for her was seeing an adult friend's bathingsuit top come off in the water. When she saw a 2 piece suit at the store she said "no way, it'll come off when I do a cannonball!"

That may change as dd gets older, but for now she's into "utility" for swimsuits. She has 6 or 7 of them since we have year round access to an indoor pool.

Hi Amibee!

I would donate them to another family. I just don't think they need to have bikinis at younger ages. They don't

I haven't decided anything yet. I'm hoping she'll forget about them and I'll be able to get rid of them before it's too late.

I'm guilty of the bikini thing ;-) She's had one pretty much since she could walk. I always go to Old Navy every summer and buy them matching patriotic suits (dork!) I have 2 boys and a girl so the boys have the same suit and hers is pretty much the same...red white and blue.....I wore them all the time too...so I dont know LOL she has a couple 1 piece ones too, and she gets to choose when we go swimming

I have a 6 soon to be 7 year old daughter that wears a bikini. I'm not extremly comfortable with it but I think if you don't look at it in a sexual way like wearing a bikini makes you look sexy, most little girls think it's just cool. My daughter is a real diva and loves clothes...I try not to make a big deal with it..Tough call but each our own

I think matching patriotic suits is a great idea! Very cute, too!
