My 1st grader learned about 1/4 and 1/2 earlier in the year. Don't compare what you learned to what they are learning now. It's soooo totally different. I have a 19 yr old and my 6 yr old is learning now what he learned in 2nd and 3rd grade.

Oh I know, it seems like the schools' teaching these days is alot more advanced than it was 30 years ago! lol

I teach first grade and YES we do teach the children about the basics of fractions. I teach 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4. They need to know how to say each one properly (one HALF *which is the hardest to remember*, one third, one forth). They must be able to recognize shapes divided into halves, thirds, and fourths and properly shade the requested portion of the shape. Don't worry! My students usually pass the fractions chapter with flying colors, as it is super easy. As review / enrichment at home...draw lines to divide paper plates into the fractions, have your child decorate their paper plate pizza (optional fun), and cut along your lines. Don't forget to label each fraction of the pizza with black marker so she can easily match the fractions back together. Play games with the pizzas...mom ate 1 part of the pizza with four parts, what fraction did mom eat? (1/4) Hope this helped!

The twins have learned a little about them, Matthew has learned more because he's more advanced in math and the teacher was introducing some new stuff to challenge him.

My daughter is in kindergarten and fractions have already been introduced. I find myself saying, "I didn't learn this until 2nd or 3rd grade" almost every day.

I think it's great, though. The more they're exposed to, the more they'll absorb.
