Holiday Gift Ideas
Sat, 10-29-2005 - 4:51pm

Hi everyone:

I know that Halloween isn't even here yet; however, I am determined to get my Christmas shopping done before December this year. I don't have any really good ideas for what to get my First Grader son and my four year old daughter, though. What are you folks thinking about this year?

6.5 year old DS will probably get -
one of the new Harry Potter legos from the new movie
some kind of board game
a magic kit
probably something with either Yu-Gi-Oh or Pokemon - I'm sure they'll have something new he wants before the holiday arrives - if not then maybe a DVD, computer game or a book for his Leap Pad.

4.5 year DD will probably get -
Angelina Ballerina doll with clothes
some kind of Polly Pocket set
maybe a ballet barre (Target and Amazon have a plastic snap together set)
Ballerina Barbie with Kelly

2.5 year old DD will probably get -
I DON'T KNOW! She's the hard one for me as she has so much handed down from the older ones.

They will all get books and PJ's on Christmas Eve. They will all get candy and ornaments in their stockings on Christmas morning. I may do some kind of art supplies for all of them for stocking stuffer this year - glue sticks, tape, stickers, crayons, pencils, etc. etc.

I was thinking of getting my 7 year old stepson and my husband a trip to Disneyworld for all of us. I know this sounds like a little much, but SS has everything and hardly plays with what he has. Husband never got to go to Disney so I thought I'd get a stuffed Mickey Mouse and put it under the tree with the tickets (to stepson from Santa, of course). I think I'm going to arrange the flight so we can go during our Christmas break (like leave the next morning). I thought it would be so nice to get away after the holiday rush and just spend some time together having fun instead of buying a bunch of toys this year. We also didn't get to go on vacation at all this year so everyone was kind of bummed about that.

For Sherina's first Christmas (she was 9 months old), DH & I decided to only buy her 3 gifts. It wasn't that we couldn't afford much--but several things factored into our decision:

1. Her birthday is in March
2. She's my mom's only granddaughter (she was until 6 weeks ago)
3. DH is his mom's only son (and youngest child)
4. Mom & my ILs buy things for their respective grandkids throughout the year (clothes, books, & toys).

Based on these reasons, we decided to keep Christmas gifts to a minimum, & 3 was the magic number.

This year, with Hurricane Katrina wiping out DH's job (it sat across Highway 90 for a month), we were afraid we wouldn't be able to buy Christmas gifts at all. But with the casino & others providing Coast residents with necessities--and toys for the kids--Sherina realized that she now has too many toys & asked us not to buy her much this year!

The casino DH worked for gave her a Barbie playset & she got more Barbies from other distribution centers, so the only things I plan to give her are a "That's So Raven" Barbie & a Barbie vehicle of some type. She doesn't want much 'cause she knows other kids have lost their homes. I'm so very proud of her unselfishness!

I'm going to try and do experience gifts too, for as long as I can. We went to Disneyland last year (cheaper than gifts, actually, since we were already in LA). For older dd's 6th birthday last week, we told her we're going to the GreatWolf Lodge during the teacher conferences. She's totally excited! For younger dd's birthday, we take the family to the circus, which happens to be in town that week every year.

So this Christmas, I don't know yet, but it'll be a do-something, rather than a get-something gift. Maybe Radio City Music Hall tickets or something...? Hmmmm....
