Ideas for reward system/allowance

Does anyone have any suggestions on reward charts/allowances?? I have heard so many controversial things that I am confused on how to do it. I have tried the chart method and the kids lost interest in that in about a week. Started out great but as soon as the "easy" chores were full, they didn't want to do the "hard" chores. My kids are dd 7, ds 4 1/2, and dd 2 1/2. Somone suggested poker chip method on the other board, but that kind of confused me. Also, is allowance for chores or not? I have heard both versions, which is better?

We have told Tre from the beginning that his job is to do well in school but as a family member he is expected to do his share around the house. Just as his does his, we will do ours; our job is to help him make good choices and be responsibile. SO...we gave him a few things to do:

  1. Homework and proofread-stating the

Hello,

I'm new to this board, but I'm very active in another board--the March Expecting Club. Your title caught my eye so I wanted to put my 2 cents in.

I am currently pregnant and have a DD that is 7 and a DS that is 3. It finally hit me that chores/allowance are something that at least my DD needed. I went to this site http://www.dltk-cards.com/chart/ and started my own chart. My chart for her includes Homework, clean & vacuum her room, feed "her" cat, clean the house of her stuff and put them in her room, get her clothes and backpack ready for the next day, take bath & brush teeth, and then a 25 cent extra. I print this chart out and then once she does her chore she can place a sticker (from walmart) on the chore she has done. The extra is just anything that she sees that needs to be done--lets her use her imagination a little. She loves to fill the chore chart up with her stickers. If she does all of her chores, I pay her $5/week and 25 cents for each extra. I also started a coupon thing with her too. If I feel like she's done a great job, I'll go into Word on the computer and use clip art and make up coupons like Good Manners coupon means she can skip the 1 chore of her choice, Ice Cream day where we go get her an ice cream, or Light for a Night which means she can have her nightlight on in her room. She has one that plugs in but she likes to have another one on too. She REALLY does good with this chart. At the end of each week when I pay her I give her a coupon that reads once she collects 4 of these coupons, she can turn them back into me for a $20 toy. This give HER the responsibility of keeping up with these coupons.

I felt like I needed to do something before the new baby gets here AND she needs to learn how to be responsible with cleaning her stuff and holding onto her money and coupons.

I have used several different chore charts and I love this one. It sits on the refridgerator and every Sunday we change it to a new one. She's usually eager to get started. I think it's just the routine of getting into chores.

Anyway, sorry to be so long-winded. I hope this helps.

Thanks!!

And as my 7 year old...going on 17...grows and as I have questions, I'm sure I'll be here more often. I guess I'll be checking the 7 year old, 3 year old, and newborn playgroups ;) Again, thanks for your nice words.
