I know this was on the news, so you may already be aware of this, but in case you are not, the Center for Environmental Health has announced that it is filing lawsuits against makers of soft vinyl lunch boxes that contain harmful levels of lead.

Here is the website for more information.

Have a great day!

It's funny that you should post this. Just the other night we were out to dinner with some friends and one of them is a environmental forensic scientist. We were talking about kid things and the lunch box problem came up and I asked him about it. He said unless the kids are "licking" the lunch boxes it will not cause problems for the kids. He said there are other things to worry about like peanut butter and all the pesticides that go into growing the nuts and plastic water bottles. The water is fine, but the plastic is another story. In fact he is publishing an article on the unhealthy dangers inside kid's lunch boxes and the lunch box itself isn't one of them.

Well, I'm glad that he doesn't think it is a threat and I certainly agree that there are poisons all around us. That said, I still see no reason to expose my children to lead when there are alternatives available. Apparently in the lining of one of the boxes they tested there was more than 90 times the amount of lead than is legal to allow in paint. If they don't think it is safe for paint, which is not customarily eaten off of, then I don't feel comfortable with it in my children's lunch boxes.

Absolutely agree and thankfully my son's lunch box wasn't on the list. Before my conversation with this friend the other night I was thinking paper lunch sacks, but then the kids won't be recycling all those paper bags! Too many choices for parents, but not a lot of good options.
