No playdates for my kids

Hello everyone: I am new to this board but not new to the iVillage message boards. I used to hang out in the Frugal Families and had to quit when I went to India for a long time to take care of my parents etc etc. Anyway, so are your kiddos wearing green to school tomorrow? I have to rush to Target to buy a green T-shirt for my 7-yr old boy:-)).

My question is: my 7-yr old has nobody to play with. Our neighborhood has some old folks, so not many new families. But even the kids who are his age are "too shy, or too tired for evening playdates."

My son is very popular in class and does great academically also, despite being born deaf. He wears cochlear implants to fix this problem and is a great kid. So I know my son doesn't cause any problems with playdates.

He used to go Little Gym and now we do karate 3x/week and we are busy that way. But nobody talks to me in these classes. When I enter the classroom, all the moms are on the cell phone or talking to their friends. I did introduce myself to two moms when I met them in Shoprite but once in class, they don't even look at me. I got friendly with another Indian lady in the neighborhood but she says her boy is too tired for evening playdates and weekends are family time (then she complains he watches TV/does Wii most of the time).

My daughter, in middle school, gets off her bus with 10 other kids, 7 are girls. Yet they don't have playdates but just keep texting each other. Is this level of interaction enough for middle school kids?

I am asking these questions because both my kids could do with outdoor excersie. DD wears glasses and DS has poor muscle strength. They will play outside/go to park only if they have friends and it is so hard to come up with playdates even once a week.

Thanks so much for reading my post and letting me vent!

Melissa, thanks for your prompt reply. We do have karate 3x/week, dance once a week and I try to take them walking etc. I am just frustrated that it is so hard to make casual friends and then drop my son off or get somebody to play with him. I guess everyone is also doing activities and there is no time for an impromptu playdate.
