Pink Eye

So, pink eye is going around.. and lucky me, Aubrey picked it up from a friend.

Hvae any of your kiddo's had this?

I read that since it's not gunky (just red/puffy) that it has to run it's course and drops will only help soothe it but not make it go away.. so we're using drops from walmart. It started Sat. afternoon and as of tonight, Tuesday, it's not any better!!

Any ideas how long this will stick around? And for her to go back to school, does it have to look totally normal or can a little pink (but not puffy) be ok? I hate that she's missing so much school.

She's doing pretty good not touching it but and we're washing hands, wiping down door knobs, changing her pillowcase.. I really, really hope no one else gets it.. but she's fighting me HARD on staying in her room. She says she's soo bored.. I dont' know what to do. I don't want her out playing with my 3 year old or the baby.. if they get it, I'm sure I'll get it. I've tried movies, coloring projects, all sorts of things. Normally she would love that! But she keeps coming out and trying to play with the boys.

Any suggestions? The worst part is she's taking it so personally.. she doesn't understand how contagious (sp?) it is.. I'm being really light/fun about reminding her to stay in her room and she still gets so upset.. yells how mean i am.. because she doesn't want to stay in there. I feel so bad. My poor baby just isn't understanding the reasoning.. and I'm getting very frustrated. I'm also cocerned because I'm pretty sure you can't wear contacts if you get it.. and that's all I have (my fames broke almost a year ago and I don't know where they are anyway), AND I'm on my last pair of contacts and have to get an eye exam to get more.. I can't see ANYTHING without my contacts. Seriously, probably less than 12". How am I supposed to do things if I'm almost blind?

Oh yeah, and the baby's front teeth are coming in and he's miserable.. Between that and the idea of Aubrey cooped up in the house (possibly) the rest of the week, I think I'll go crazy!

I feel so bad for you, and of course Aubrey. I would go to the docter. I have always been under the assumption that pink eye needs antibiotic drops to treat it. I just picked up some craft ornament kits from Wal-Mart! There's 30 in a pack. I got the stocking, bulbs, and angels, aoh and snow flakes!! They are foam, and come with glitter glue. In my opinion, don't get the angels. I had to use a hot glue gun to get them to actually stick! But the bulbs, stocking and snowflakes would totally keep her busy!! They had more shapes as well! $10.00 for a pack! Thats Canadian. You could always buy a bulk pack of x-mas cards and let her glitter decorate them!
Anyways we're sending you hugs and hope everyone is feeling better very soon!

good idea! I'll go look for that today. I called her Ped. since it's still here.. it's swollen almost closed. Lucky me, they just called in an rx!!! I'm soooo happy.. I don't have to drive 25 min. to get there and pay $15 co-pay to be told it's pink eye, and listen to the baby cry the whole time. :o)

Now let's just hope it goes away quickly. I'm guessing she won't be able to go to school the rest of the week. That just kills me.. missing school for a week because of pink eye. We haven't even hit the winter colds yet! :o( Ugh.

Jumping in here to say that there are other things that can cause an eye to be red and awful looking than just pink eye. My DD (almost 7) was just diagnosed last week with a *staph infection* in her eye!!! I about fell out of my chair when the opthamologist gave the diagnosis (DD's regular Ped wasn't sure what it was). Luckily, she is fine and has responded well to treatment and her eye looks sooooo much better! ($150 later...)

Good luck and I hope your DD finds relief soon....and that it really is just plain old pink eye!

I'm glad to got the RX for the pink eye. My older DD had it several times when she was little. Thankfully Gillian has never had it.

Anyway, my suggestion is this. I would buy a bunch of handi-wipes and small bottles of hand sanitizer and let her carry it around in her pocket or in a purse. Make her use it often and especially right before she touches anything or anyone. Then maybe she can come out of her room and watch movies or play quietly by herself.

I hope she's better soon!

Thanks for all the info.. here's an update.

So Wed. we got eye drops.. late that afternoon it looked like there was a bubble between her eye and the eyelid and it kept getting worse so as soon as dh got home, we took her to the ER. The nurse there was so rude and said it was this bad because I waited until that day to get her eyedrops. I'm a nice person, but I soooo wanted to kick her! :o( They didn't know so they sent us to the Childrens hospital ER.

They at first said she needed a cat scan and she could possibly go blind, etc. it was so bad.. it was really scary. It kept getting worse and worse.. at the end, the dr. flipped her eyelid out a bit and all this swollen tissue spilled out. SO, NOT NORMAL! My poor baby.. and I was holding the baby so I couldn't get to close to her since I don't want him to get it.. then, they changed their minds and said it was an allergic reaction. So $175 later (after all the co-pays, meds) they sent us home at 1 in the morning.

We went to an Eye Clinic the next morning and were there for over 4 hours.. doing tests, looking at it, they even took pictures of it.. only to be told he thinks it's severe pink eye and it's viral so it has to run it's course (Oh, how I watn to write that mean ER nurse a mean letter). :o( But, "just in case" he gave us an Rx for an antibiotic and antibiotic eye drops.

Today, her eye isn't as swollen and purple.. but the actual eye is still soooo bad. I'm dissapointed the inside hasn't cleared up more. She still can't see real well (it was 20/100 at the Dr's).. and they're guessing she'll be contagious another 4-5 days.. and it will take at least a week to get back to normal. I"m thinking it will be longer than that.

Here are some pics if you want to see.. they don't do it justice though. They look MUCH nicer in here than IRL.

This is MOnday night (Hade's birthday).. on Wed. afternoon it was the same only swollen mostly closed.

Here's a pic of all 3, just because.. they were being silly.

This was before we left to the ER. It got a lot owrse after this.. and there was a good 1/2 in between her eye and the eyelid where the swollen tissue was.

This is today.. she's opening as far as she can.

You can kind of see into her eye in this one.. it's so read and bloody looking.. you can't see any white in her eye.

:o(
This has been so awful.. We're still being super careful w/ wipes, washing hands, washing everything else. I've been letting her play out of her room since she's being really good now about not touching anything. And if she has to wipe her eye she uses TP, it goes right in the toilet and she washes her hands. Knock on wood the rest of us dont' get it!!!

How awful!!!! We had an issue with Trinity and her eyes at one point last year and waited an ETERNITY at the Children 's Hospital, too. I kept thinking if she really had something wrong she'd be blind by now! UG!

I Hope things get better. Is she in pain? Poor thing! I remember I had it that bad one year when I was still actively teaching PREK. NOT FUN! My eye looking bloody, just like hers.

HUGS and healing vibes to her!!
