School starting in July
10
Thu, 07-26-2007 - 12:10am

My kids go back to school July 30th. Open house is this Friday and class lists were out last week. Does this just seem wrong to anyone else? When I was a kid, we never started until after labor day. A few years ago, our school system moved to what they call a "balanced calendar". In other words, they get 8 weeks off in the summer and many weeks off during the year (1 in october, full week at Thanksgiving, 2 weeks at Christmas, 1 in Feb. and another for spring break). For me, I feel like their summer has been shortened. It seems like it was just the end of May and school was ending. Also, my biggest gripe is the fact we start one week BEFORE our tax free shopping days.

When do your kids start back? Do you think July 30th is too early (BTW -- the county next to us starts July 27th, yes, that is right, their first day back is a Friday).

We do not start up again until September 4 and got out of school on June 13... But I am at the point where I would almost KILL to have a school schedule like yours!!!!!! The novelty of summer has worn off for my kids by this point; they are tired of swimming and playing with the same old playmates... August is looming big and empty ahead of us, as there are no camps/activities around here in August.

hello!! it does seem WAY too early. i never went back until after labor day...im in michigan and i think the governor here passed a law that states the kids are not allowed to start until after labor day-its state wide. i like it, but the kids dont get out until mid-june. the thing about going back so early-i know here in august, it still gets hot...and i know most of our schools do not have a/c-when its hot, the kids have a hard time concentrating-same thing if it really cold...i think that school needs to rethink their schelude...take care and good luck with monday!!

Our kids go back August 6, and they have been out since Memorial Day weekend.

I actually like this set up.

Our schools have air conditioning. Being in the south (Atlanta area) it is hot here until October so you basically are forced to have it. However, the buses are not air conditioned. But, since my kids get on the bus at 6:30 am (we do it backwards here and start elementary first), it is not really that hot for them in the mornings.

I never started before Labor Day when I was a child. But, I do remember not getting out until mid June. Actually my senior year we had so much snow (in Virginia) that our graduation was not until Father's Day weekend.

We are in the Atlanta area too, just north west of the metro area.

Small world. We are actually south east of Atlanta in Rockdale County.
Since you are in Georgia, you might have noticed that we are starting school BEFORE the tax free weekend. Something is very wrong with that. We are holding off doing any major shopping until next weekend and just getting them one or two outfits this weekend. Actually it could be worse -- the county next to us (Newton) actually started today. I do not understand starting school on a Friday.

I have to say I'm starting to wish dd could go back to school.. it's been around 100 every day for weeks now and it's just too hot to get out and do things during the day. We're all going bored and I've ran out of ideas! And I think there's another 3-4 weeks before school starts again. I also like the idea of having more vacation time at Christmas.. she only gets a week off right now and it's crazy. Spring break is just a few days.. I don't remember it being like that when I was a kid.

We don't have a tax-free day here. I WISH! We're on a tight budget so I'm always watching for sales/clearance.. Early spring I was able to get her a bunch of shirts from Childrens Place for like $4 each and just a few weeks ago they had an even bigger sale and I got some for $3.20 each as well as Capri's for the same price. I just put a few of them aside each time at the other end of her closet so they're new for school. I even leave the tags on so they remind her they aren't to be worn. lol And on old Navy's website a few weeks ago I was able to get Capri's for $2.75 each and Jeans for $6-7 each.. so I got several. Before school starts let her buy 1 new shirt of her choice from a store.. this year she chose a Strawberry Shortcake shirt from walmart for $6. lol I guess she liked how sparkly it was. :o)

Oh yeah, I was going to ask.. do any of your kids know who Bobby Jack is? Those clothes are so popular here.. and they're $$$$!! I don't think I even knew about brands when I was in first grade (what she was last year). All the kids are always talking about it though..

Your balanced schedule sounds a lot like our year round schedule.
